TAMPA, Fla. – Despite 14 hits, 10 runs and a lead going into the eighth, the Embry-Riddle Eagles couldn't overcome six errors in the early going and a late Tampa rally as the Spartans won the 1,500
th game in their program history. ERAU (31-16) had a 7-4 lead after two innings and a 10-9 lead late, but UT (31-11) scored twice in the bottom of the eight to secure the third straight win over the Eagles for the Spartans.
The Eagle defense struggled in the first inning after the ERAU offense went quietly in the top of the frame. Tampa struck for four runs on four hits with the help of three Eagle errors to take early command of the contest.
The Eagles bounced back in the top of the second thanks to four hits and another UT error, tying the game at 4-4 on a
Tobias Moreno single through the right side before taking a 7-4 lead on an
Enderson Velasquez double. Velasquez stretched his hitting streak to 16 with a leadoff base hit, and after
Joshua Garcia was retired,
Matt Jacobs ripped a ball back up the middle and
Kyle Buchanan nearly collected three RBIs with a shot to right center that hit a few feet below the top of the fence. Velasquez scored on Buchanan's double and
Jordan Brown brought in another run with an RBI groundout. A key throwing error by the Tampa third baseman allowed
Cody Bogart to be safe and move to second while Buchanan crossed home. Moreno brought in Bogart in the next at-bat before
Jake Cavender doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third for Goodall and the junior outfielder collected an infield single to put the Blue and Gold ahead, 5-4. Velasquez's double to left just missed being a long ball as two more Eagle runs came across to score for a 7-4 Eagle advantage.
Wagner worked through the bottom of the second smoothly before the Eagles went in order in the third, but once again the Embry-Riddle defense struggled in the home-half of the inning, committing three more errors, allowing four runs to score as Tampa took an 8-7 lead in the frame.
Kevin Martin took the mound for the Spartans to start the fourth and breezed through the frame as Tampa held on to the one-run lead. Moreno came up with a tremendous diving catch in left center to rob extra bases, but the Spartans still managed to push across a run to increase their lead to 9-7.
The back-and-forth game continued that trend in the fifth as the visitors struck for three runs to retake a one-run lead over Tampa. Goodall and Velasquez registered back-to-back hits before Garcia brought in a run with a groundout and Jacobs tied things up with an RBI base hit. Jacobs stole second but was knocked out of the game in the process, and
Hunter Bruehl, replacing Jacobs, scored on the third UT error of the game, as the Eagles took a 10-9 lead.
Stetson Nelson relieved Wagner to start the 5
th and got a nice double play from Garcia, Cavender and Bruehl to end the frame and strand the potential tying run at third.
Moreno singled, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch, but the Eagles couldn't bring him in to score in the sixth, but Nelson held the Spartans scoreless in the last of the frame, keeping ERAU in front, 10-9.
Nelson worked a smooth seventh, as did the Spartans' Brett Jones, and despite the Eagles getting a runner to second in the top of the eighth, an impressive catch by Casey Scoggins in center denied Cavender an RBI, ending the inning with no damage done.
Back-to-back Spartan doubles to start the bottom of the eighth tied the contest at 10-10, and after a groundout moved the go-ahead runner to third Cody deNoyelles delivered a hit up the middle just out of the reach of Garcia, as Tampa reclaimed the lead, 11-10.
The Eagles threatened in the ninth, getting a leadoff single from Goodall and a hit by pitch for Garcia, but two ground outs ended the game as Tampa held on for the 11-10 victory.
Nelson (6-4) got the loss in relief, allowing two runs over four innings of work while Wagner went four frames, surrendering six earned runs on 11 hits.
Goodall and Velasquez each had three hits for the Eagles while Moreno and Jacobs added two hits and an RBI each. Brown and Velasquez each had two RBIs for ERAU.
