DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The bats were hot, the pitching solid and the crowd was large as the 19
th-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles run-ruled the Warner Royals on Friday night, 16-6 in eight innings. The Eagles (25-13, 12-6) pounded out 15 hits and got a quality start out of
Tyler Cyr, making his first Friday night start for the Blue and Gold in front of 514 fans at Sliwa Stadium. The Royals (12-26-1, 4-13) dropped their sixth straight game to Embry-Riddle, managing just five hits against the Eagle pitching staff.
Cyr took the ball for the Eagles and was his typical self on the mound, allowing just three hits while striking out six en route to his fifth win of the 2015 season. The junior from Fremont, Calif. started things off with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first and duplicated that in the second, collecting two strikeouts in the process.
The hosts got on the board first when
Matt Jacobs flew out to left field in the bottom of the second, bringing in
Joshua Garcia after the ERAU second baseman tripled to start the inning. After
Kyle Buchanan reached on an error in the next at-bat,
Cody Bogart was hit by a pitch and
Jordan Brown recorded an RBI single to left, scoring Buchanan from second and giving the Blue and Gold a 2-0 lead.
Tobias Moreno pushed the cushion to 3-0 with an RBI base hit to center, bringing in Bogart's courtesy runner,
Kyle Zirbes.
Cyr faced just four batters in the third, as did his Warner counterpart, Dylan Heiring as the game moved to the fourth with the Eagles in front by three runs.
The Royals got a couple runs in the fourth inning, trimming their deficit to 3-2, the first run coming on a fielder's choice, but an error on the play allowed a runner to reach second after a run had already scored and the visitors made ERAU pay for the miscue when Tomas Rivera singled in the run in the next at-bat. Cyr ended the threat by fanning Kevin Gregg for the final out of the inning, preserving the 3-2 lead.
ERAU didn't wait long to answer the Royal rally, plating four runs in the home half of the frame to go up 7-2. Bogart started things off for the Eagles with a single to center before Moreno brought his courtesy runner, Zirbes, home with a double down the left field line. After
Jake Cavender drew a walk from Heiring,
Liam Goodall reached first thanks to a catcher's interference call to load the bases for
Enderson Velasquez. Heiring hit Velasquez with a pitch to force in the second run of the inning and Garcia did the rest in the next at-bat, driving a pitch to left to plate two more Embry-Riddle runs.
A two-out walk in the fifth came back to haunt Cyr as the Royals brought the run in with a double from Jordan Pike, making the score 7-3, but Cyr settled in and went three-up, three-down in the sixth before his offense gave him some more insurance with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
After Heiring got two quick outs to start the sixth, Velasquez doubled to right before Garcia recorded an infield single to put runners on the corners. Jacobs stepped to the plate and had a great at-bat, working a full count before tripling to deep left center for a 9-3 lead. A few pitches later Jacobs raced home on a Heiring wild pitch for the 10
th ERAU run of the evening.
Cyr walked himself into a jam to start the seventh, issuing free passes to the first two Royal batters in the inning, but after
Clayton Wagner came in to relieve Cyr the Royals walked away empty-handed. Wagner struck out Torri Pringle before getting a groundout from Rodriguez for the second out of the frame, and with two runners in scoring position, Wagner finished the inning with a strikeout of Pike to keep ERAU in front by seven runs.
Austen Thrailkill started on the bump in the eighth for Embry-Riddle, but three walks and two wild pitches resulted in two runs for the Royals and
Zac Grotz was called upon the end the threat. Grotz got two outs before Zach Quillian registered a pinch hit RBI single, chasing in another Warner run and making it 10-6. A nice defensive play by Cavender in the next at-bat sent the Eagles back into the dugout with a four-run cushion.
The Eagles ended the game in the bottom of the eighth, earning the run-rule shortened victory thanks to a six-spot in the inning. Bobby Barradas struggled out of the bullpen, issuing a leadoff walk to Velasquez and after an error allowed
Hunter Bruehl to reach base, Barradas walked Buchanan and
Ryan Maxon to force in a run. Brown, who entered the night with just one hit on the year, took a 2-1 pitch from Barradas and deposited it over the left field fence for a no-doubt grand slam, the 10
th home run for the Eagles in 2015. After a Moreno single, the Eagle center fielder moved to third on a wild pitch and Goodall accounted for the final RBI with a single to left, scoring his fellow outfielder and ending the contest.
Cyr (5-2) got the win in six innings of work, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits with six Ks. Wagner struck out two batters in an inning of relief while Grotz was effective in his lone inning of relief, surrendering one hit with one strikeout.
Garcia finished the night 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs while Brown had his best game as an Eagle, collecting five RBIs on two hits with a run scored and Moreno went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Bogart was 2-for-3 while his courtesy runner Zirbes scored three times. Cavender also had a multi-hit night with two base hits and a run scored. Both Goodall and Velasquez had an RBI and a run scored as well as a hit and Jacobs drove registered three RBIs for ERAU.
The two teams meet again tomorrow, Saturday, April 4 for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
