LEWISTON, Idaho - The sixth-seeded Embry-Riddle Eagles made it interesting, scoring six runs in the last two innings and putting the potential tying run at third with one out in the ninth, but second-seeded Faulkner held on for a 7-6 win in the 2015 Avista-NAIA World Series. ERAU (40-18) committed four errors and Faulkner (50-13) took advantage, scoring four unearned runs against Embry-Riddle to move into the winner's bracket finale at the 10-team event. The Blue and Gold will take on either Oklahoma Baptist tomorrow at 12 p.m. (PT) or Concordia (Calif.) at 3 p.m. (PT) in an elimination contest.
Zac Grotz got the start for Embry-Riddle, matching shutouts with Faulkner's Christian Torres through five innings, ultimately finishing with seven innings of seven-hit ball, allowing three runs (one earned) with eight strikeouts.
Faulkner took a 1-0 lead in the sixth when Joung grounded out to first to score Polanco from third, despite a fantastic defensive play from
Hunter Bruehl to rob Joung of a base hit.
Chris Madera made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to deep center field in the seventh, and a Llera base hit a few batters later resutled in a 3-0 lead for Faulkner, both runs in the inning being unearned.
Grotz was relieved by
Tyler Cyr in the eighth and Faulkner doubled its lead to 6-0, thanks in part to another ERAU error that led to a pair of unearned runs.
Embry-Riddle was finally able to chase Torres from the game in the bottom of the eighth after a run scored on a
Jake Cavender single. Brandon Bass came in and walked
Liam Goodall before
Enderson Velasquez singled in a run to make it 6-2.
Joshua Garcia trimmed the lead to 6-4 with a single through the right side, scoring both Cavender and Goodall.
Faulkner closer Castro entered and after a fielder's choice got
Kyle Buchanan to ground a ball to short to end the Eagle rally.
Faulker loaded the bases in the top of the ninth and would manage an insurance run against
Clayton Wagner, making it 7-4 for the Eagles of Alabama.
Embry-Riddle got a one-out base hit from pinch hitter
A.J. Mazzurco before
Tobias Moreno was hit by a pitch. Cavender singled to center against Castro to load the bags for Goodall. Goodall grounded a ball to third and the throw home was in the dirt, allowing Mazzurco and Moreno to score unearned runs to cut the deficit to 7-6.
With runners at the corners and one out, Castro quickly got a head of Velasquez 0-2 before inducing a ground ball double play to end the threat and game.
Grotz (8-2) suffered the loss while Cavender recorded three hits in five trips to the plate. Garica finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Moreno scored two runs.
