SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team was blanked by the Saint Leo Lions 2-0 on Saturday night at the University Turf Stadium. The Eagles record falls to 2-5-3 while the Lions improve to 3-6.
Head Coach Dave Gregson commented, "It's a frustrating result because we played so well for such long periods of the match. At the moment, lapses in concentration in both our attacking decisions and our defensive responsibilities are costing us dearly"
Richard Dearle served as the goalkeeper for the Eagles saving three of the five Lion shots on goal.
The first half started out with the Lions controlling the ball and getting the first goal in the eighth minute on a hard shot by Teddy Auyoma that slipped past Dearle.
The Eagles picked up the pace later in the half and created more back-and-forth action, taking five shots compared to the Lions' seven.
Daniel Gylfason had the best opportunity to score with a shot from the left corner of the box, but SLU goalkeeper James White made a diving save to keep the Blue and Gold off the scoreboard.
In the 43
rd minute, the Lions' Michael Tinari managed to score off of a corner kick by Chris Puente to bring the score at the half to 2-0.
The second half was very chippy, resulting in five total cautions and eleven fouls committed by each team.
Knutur Bjornsson had an opportunity to score after receiving a pass from
Pierre Hertin in front of the net but his shot went just wide. ERAU kept the Lions off the scoreboard in the second half, but Saint Leo was able to prevent the Eagles from scoring as well, and the Lions went on to claim the 2-0 victory.
"Next week we play the top two teams in the conference," Gregson stated. "We will use that as a measure as to how much we have improved as a group in this league."
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 19 as they take on the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic at the ERAU Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.
