WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-17, 27-25, 25-22) to the 12th-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Saturday afternoon. The loss puts the Eagles' season mark at 12-12, while PBA improves to 23-3.
Asya Oguz led the Eagles with 14 kills and a career-high 18 digs, while
Amanda Saunders chipped in with eight kills and 10 digs.
Jordan Nakayama had 26 assists and 10 digs while
Paola Virella (17 digs) and
Maile Spenser (13 digs) each reached double-figures in digs.
The Sailfish used an 8-2 run midway through the first set to take a 15-9 lead that proved to be insurmountable for the Blue and Gold. PBA didn't allow ERAU to get any closer than five points for the rest of the set, which ended as a 25-17 win for Palm Beach Atlantic.
Set two looked to be in control of the Sailfish once again, as PBA held leads of 14-8 and 23-16. But in the closing stages of the frame, Embry-Riddle found some life and battled all the way back, scoring eight out of nine points to tie things up at 24. The Blue and Gold couldn't pull ahead, however, and PBA proved to have just enough in the tank to secure a 27-25 win, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
A 5-0 run in the middle stages of set three pushed the Sailfish to a 16-11 advantage, but ERAU fought back to within a single point when an Oguz kill made it 21-20. A few points later, the Eagles drew even on a PBA error that tied the set at 22 apiece. That would prove to be the final scoring play of the day for Embry-Riddle, as Palm Beach Atlantic picked up the final three points of the match to win the third set, 25-22, finishing the 3-0 sweep.
The Eagles return to the court next Tuesday, Nov. 8, when they play host to Eckerd. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the ICI Center.
