DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Auburn Montgomery snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Embry-Riddle Eagles at Sliwa Stadium on Thursday night, holding ERAU to its lowest hit total in over a year and a half in a 3-1 win. The Eagles (5-2) managed just three hits on the night, failing to solve a quartet of AUM (3-1) pitchers in the loss.
After a scoreless top of the first from ERAU starter
Corey Tufts, the Eagles got a leadoff single from
Tobias Moreno against Kade Suther, but after Moreno stole second the Eagles couldn't bring him in as Suther sent the game to the second scoreless.
AUM got two runs in the third off of Tufts thanks to a pair of hits, a walk and to hit batters, and Suther delivered a shut down inning by going 1-2-3 in the third in the midst of retiring 14 consecutive Eagle batters from the end of the first inning to the sixth.
Kenny Burkhead, who relieved Tufts in the fourth, gave up back-to-back hits to start the seventh as AUM took a 3-0 lead, the only real trouble Burkhead faced in 4.1 innings of relief.
The Eagles put two runners on in the eighth against Brady Eldridge, and a throwing error by the AUM shortstop allowed an Eagle run to score, but Eldridge minimized the damage by getting
Joey Swinarski to ground out softly for the final out fo the frame.
Embry-Riddle made things interesting in the ninth against AUM closer Jed Carter as
Joshua Garcia and
Matt Jacobs both walked to start the inning.
Kyle Zirbes moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt, but Eldridge struck out both
Mitchel Lindheim and
Logan Malphurs to earn his second save of the year.
Tufts (2-1) got the loss in 4.2 innings, walking four with seven Ks, while Burkhead tossed the final 4.1 innings, scattering five hits.
Moreno had two of the Eagles' three hits and scored the lone ERAU run of the night.
The Blue and Gold will have until Wednesday, Feb. 17 to prepare for Flagler as the Saints come in for a 6 p.m. first pitch at Sliwa Stadium.
