WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle Softball team overcame a last minute surge to defeat Palm Beach Atlantic 4-3 on Friday night.
Kassidy Simons picked up her tenth win in the circle giving up just three hits and striking out four. Despite a season-high six errors in the win, the Eagles move to 21-8 on the year while PBA falls to 17-11.
ERAU 4, PBA 3Anna Battison started the game off with a single to center field but it wasn't until the second inning that the Eagles got on the board.
Robi Zimmerman began the inning with a double to right center field. She then advanced to third base on a single by
Rae Heuer.
Victoria Reed then hit a ball up the first base line, reaching first on a fielder's choice. Zimmerman beat out the throw to home to give the Blue and Gold their first score of the game.
Natalie Morales then reached base on an error which brought Heuer around to make it 2-0 in favor of the Eagles.
In the top of the fourth the Eagles got the bases loaded but it was in the top of the fifth that they added to their lead. With two outs, Heuer singled up the middle followed by Reed reaching first on a single to right field. Both Eagles advanced on a throwing error by the Sailfish right fielder.
Gabriella Obia then scored Heuer and Reed on a single to right field to put the Eagles ahead 4-0.
The Sailfish made a comeback in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits and three Eagle errors. Kilgore had a single in the inning to go along with French's double to left field, both Sailfish scored later in the inning.
In the seventh, the Eagles were able to put the Sailfish away one last time to preserve the 4-3 win. Zimmerman was 2-for-4 on the day with a double and scoring a run. Heuer was 2-for-3 with a walk also scoring two runs while Obia was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
The Eagles wrap-up the series by playing a doubleheader tomorrow, March 19 against Palm Beach Atlantic starting at 10 a.m.
