WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team picked up a series win with a 5-4 defeat of Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday. The second game of the doubleheader was called in the top of second due to rain.
Alice Donohoe was credited with her first win in the circle, pitching two innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three.
Raquelli Bianco was 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI.
ERAU 5, PBA 4It wasn't until the top of the third that either team got on the board but it was the Eagles who struck first.
Mckenzee Quinn lead off the inning with a triple to right field. She was caught trying to steal home but started a hot hitting streak that saw
Natalie Morales,
Anna Battison and Biano hit consecutive singles to put the Eagles ahead 1-0.
The Blue and Gold added a run in the top of the fourth as well.
Robi Zimmerman got a lead off walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Rae Heuer.
Victoria Reed then singled to left field and a throwing error by the Sailfish outfielder allowed Zimmerman to score.
The Sailfish made a come back in the bottom of the fifth. A triple from Kayla Knight scored two and a few batters later Loren Kilgore doubled to put PBA in front for the first time in the series, 3-2.
The lead didn't last long as the Eagles tied it up in the top of the sixth. Zimmerman once again led things off with a walk and advanced to second on a single down the left field line by Heuer. Reed then reached on an error by the Sailfish third baseman, allowing Zimmerman to cross home plate.
The Eagles scored two more in the top of the seventh. It was Bianco this time who started the inning with a walk. Simons advanced her to second with an infield single and then
Haleigh Lewis loaded the bases. Zimmerman scored the go-ahead run for the Blue and Gold with a single down the left field line. The other run was scored as Reed reached base, allowing the Eagles to take a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, PBA made a last stitch come back attempt. Knight reached base after being hit by a pitch and found second on a wild pitch. Victoria Gonzalez then drove her in to bring the Sailfish within one, 5-4. Donohoe was able to strike out the last batter to seal the win for ERAU.
Game two reached the second inning before being delayed for lightning and ultimately rained out. In that game, that Eagles were leading 6-2 before it was called.
The Eagles now return to the Embry-Riddle Softball Stadium for a mid-week doubleheader with Mount Mercy. It is slated for Tuesday, March 22 at 4 p.m.
