DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team defeated visiting Albany State on Friday afternoon 9-0. The second game of the doubleheader was called in the top of third due to rain.
Kassidy Simons and
Alice Donohoe combined for a one-hitter while striking out seven. It was Simon's 12
th win of the year; she also went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs and a sacrifice fly.
ERAU 9, ASU 0 (5 inn.)Yet again, the Eagles started the game by scoring runs in the first inning.
Anna Battison led things off with a bunt single and advanced to third on a stolen base and wild pitch. She then scored as
Raquelli Bianco blasted a double to left field and scored on the very next pitch as Simons doubled to right center field.
Haleigh Lewis then singled down the left field line to score Simons and give the Eagles an early 3-0 edge.
In the bottom of the second the Eagles added to their lead. Battison singled to left field with one out and like the first inning, stole second base. Bianco reached first on a walk and then Simons came up and ripped a shot past the pitcher to score Battison from second base. Lewis then bunted and reached base while the pitcher made a throwing error to score Bianco. Lewis and Simons then came around to score as
Rae Heuer hit a ball hard through the left side to put the Eagles ahead, 7-0.
Bianco began the bottom of the fourth with a perfectly placed ball in right center field that allowed her to reach third base for her third triple of the season. Simons then flied out to center field to allow Bianco to tag up and score the all-important eighth run of the game. Lewis then reached base on an infield single and came around to score as Heuer got aboard on a fielding error by the short stop.
Leading 9-0,
Alice Donohoe came into pitch the last half inning. She struck out the first two and forced the final Golden Ram to ground out to Lewis.
Lewis ended the day going 3-for-3, scoring two runs and picking up an RBI. Battison was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases. Zimmerman recorded her first stolen base of the season in the win.
Game two got through two innings before being called before the start of the third due to rain and impending thunderstorms. In that game, that Eagles were leading 7-2 before it was called.
The Eagles take the weekend off before returning to the Embry-Riddle Softball Stadium on Friday, April 1
st at 6pm to face Lynn.
