DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For the first time since Feb. 11, the Embry-Riddle baseball team was held to just one run as visiting Florida Tech took the series opener from ERAU, 3-1. The Eagles (25-15) got a quality start from
Troy Naab and scoreless relief work from
Dominic Jeancola and
Joey Gerber, but the Panthers (24-15) had the answers for the Eagles' potent offense as Ty Cohen and Drew Beyer combined to hold the Blue and Gold to just one run on seven hits.
Naab (2-3) got the loss for Embry-Riddle, going six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with six walks and five strikeouts, while his counterpart, Cohen (7-4) weny 6.2 frames, surrendering just one run on six hits with six Ks.
After a scoreless first inning, the first score of the contest came on a John Sprowles solo homer in the top of the second, his first of the season, giving the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.
Cohen kept the Eagles off the scoreboard through the first three innings, and his team got him a second run of support in the fourth when Sprowls singled in James Gronberg from second.
ERAU got runners to second and third with two outs in the last of the fourth, but Cohen fanned
Joey Swinarski to end the frame and the threat.
The lone Eagle run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth when
Liam Goodall took the first pitch of his at-bat out of Sliwa Stadium for his second homer of the season, cutting the Panther lead in half, 2-1.
FIT quickly got the run back when they scored in the sixth, and the Eagles' only other real threat of the night came in the bottom of the second after
Cody Bogart singled with two outs, followed by a
Tobias Moreno walk. The Panthers went to the pen for their closer Beyer to face Goodall, and the Eagle senior won the battle, beating out an infield single to load the bases. The base hit marked the 12th consecutive plate appearance that Goodall had reached base safely, his ninth straight at-bat with a hit. Beyer was able to get
Enderson Velasquez to fly out to right on a 1-1 pitch, and ERAU went in order in both the eighth and the ninth as FIT took the win.
Goodall finished 3-for-3 for the Eagles, while
Joshua Garcia went 2-for-3 and
Matt Jacobs and Bogart were the only other Eagles to get a base hit.
The Eagles and Panthers will conclude the series with a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m.
