MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team (0-2) was unable to get by Christian Brothers (1-1) on Saturday, falling 2-1 to the Bucs at Signaigo Field.
"The effort and application were outstanding tonight," ERAU Head Coach Dave Gregson said following Saturday's contest. "There's no question that the performance merited more than the result. We solved a lot of issues from Thursday's game and that was really pleasing. We created the better chances but a couple of mistakes cost us in the end."
The Eagles had the better of the offense in the first half, outshooting CBU 11-6, including a 30-yard free kick by
Felix Moller that whistled above the cross bar, and a first-touch strike by
Knutur Bjornsson that forced Bucs netminder Ricardo Lao to come up with an acrobatic save to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. But at the end of the first 45 minutes, both sides were locked in a scoreless draw.
The second frame picked up where the first half left off, but the tide slowly began to turn in favor of the Bucs who outshot the Eagles 8-4 in the final 45 minutes of play.
The Bucs finally managed to break the deadlock in the 72nd minute when got they got a shot off which ERAU netminder
Richard Dearle was able to stop with a diving save. But the ball found its way to Jannick Baumer and as Dearle worked to recover, Baumer took advantage of an open net to put CBU up 1-0.
Six minutes later, Baumer's corner kick found Brendan Bennett who headed home CBU's second goal of the night to double the home team's lead.
Despite the deficit, the Eagles continued to battle and got a goal back with just under five minutes left to play.
Moriba Ballah got the ball to Bjornsson who got in behind the CBU defense and raced into the box. Bjornsson picked out Moller coming up the left side and completed the square pass to his fellow freshman, who took advantage of being unmarked to slot home his first goal of the season.
ERAU was unable to mount another threat to the CBU defense in the closing minutes of the game, resulting in the 2-1 final score.
The Eagles will play the third of four road matches at 7 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to St. Augustine to take on Flagler.
"Flagler will be another good opportunity to keep tweaking and improving our players as we mover forward," Gregson concluded.
