@ERAUMSoccer Earns First Sunshine State Conference Win with 1-0 Result Against Tars

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team finally got a deserved result on Saturday night as the Eagles defeated Rollins at the ERAU Soccer Stadium for the first Sunshine State Conference victory in program history. The Eagles (2-7-2, 1-6-1) snapped an eight-game winless streak thanks to a beautiful long distance first-half goal from Shane Butler and by keeping the visiting Tars (8-4-1, 5-4) off the scoreboard, ending their three-game winning streak.

The Eagles were the aggressor early, holding most of the possession in the first 15 minutes and just before the 10-minute mark the Eagle capitalized on an opportunity as Tim-Frederik Lange played a forward ball to Butler on the right side of the pitch a little past midfield and the junior expertly headed the ball to himself twice, keeping his momentum and getting a step by his defender. When he was 25 yards out, Butler made a fantastic strike on the ball, sending it across the goal and over the reach of Rollins' keeper Drew Trautmann into the left side of the goal for his first score of the 2017 season.

With a 1-0 lead, the Eagles were able to turn away the Rollins' offense for the remainder of the period as Richard Dearle, en route to his second clean sheet of the year, made three nice saves in the 18th, 31st and 35th minutes, respectively.

After the halftime break in which the Eagles recognized the senior class of Magnus Magnusson, Daniel Gylfason, Taylor Stark, Felix Lohmeyer, Robert Wojtkun and Derek Griesheim, the Eagle defense continued to be up to the task of denying the Tars as the majority of the visitor's shots were contested and never really threatened Dearle in the net.

The only save Dearle needed to make in the second half came in the 77th minute, and the Eagles were able to turn around for an opportunity on the other end as Butler nearly made it 2-0, save for a fantastic stop by Trautmann.

Lange had an 82nd-minute shot attempt blocked and the final eight minutes saw the Tars desperately push forward, but the ERAU defense strand strong. The defensive play of the night for the Blue and Gold came in the 89th minute when Rollins' Johnny Nartowicz had a close shot saved off the line by the Eagle defense, which would prove to be the final shot Rollins could muster.

The 1-0 victory marked the first win for the Eagles against Rollins since a 2-0 decision on Aug. 28, 2008 in Winter Park. Dearle made four saves on the night.

ERAU finishes up the 2017 season on the road with an Oct. 25 match against Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach and an Oct. 28 contest at Nova Southeastern in Ft. Lauderdale.
