WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team showed tremendous defensive resilience on Wednesday night against the nation's second-ranked team on the road, but the No. 2 Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish scored in the 72nd and 78th minutes before ERAU was able to get a goal late to keep their unbeaten season intact with a 2-1 win over the Eagles. ERAU dropped to 2-8-2 overall and 1-7-1 in Sunshine State Conference play while PBA improved to 13-0-2 and 8-0-1, respectively.
The game was played nearly entirely in the Eagles' defensive half as PBA owned a 22-3 advantage in shots, with 10 resulting in shots on goal, as well as enjoying an 11-2 cushion in corner kicks. However, the Eagle defense kept the Sailfish off the board for the first 70 minutes of the contest as
Richard Dearle made five saves on the night before drawing a red card (his second yellow) in the 67th minute, forcing sophomore
Will Hanisch into the first action of his Eagle career. Dearle's caution resulted in a penalty kick for the hosts, but Charlie Dennis' effort hit the post as the game continued to be tied.Â
The Sailfish were finally able to break the deadlock at the 71:45 mark when Claudio Rivadeneira put his team up 1-0 with a one-timer past Hanisch. PBA doubled its lead six minutes later as Jerry Saint-Vil's shot found the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Hanisch made three saves in the final 23 minutes of the game, keeping the visitors in it and the Eagles made it interesting in the final moments as
Toby Cassidy scored his first goal of the year off a feed from
Alex O'Brien at the 88:37 mark, making it 2-1. The score was the first allowed by PBA in over a month, nearly 740 minutes of match action, and just the second total against the Sailfish in SSC play.
Embry-Riddle wraps up the 2017 season on Saturday, Oct. 28 when they travel to Ft. Lauderdale to take on Nova Southeastern at 7 p.m.
