ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Sophomore
Lauren Thielen shot the third-lowest round in program history as the Embry-Riddle women's golf team finished up the fall portion of the 2017-18 schedule on Tuesday at the Flagler Fall Slam. The Eagles shot a 313 as a team in the final round, finishing in 12th place at the Marsh Creek Country Club with a 621 (308-313).
Thielen's 71 on Tuesday marked the second time she has shot under par as an Eagle, as well as tying the third-lowest round in school history. The Lakeland native becomes just the fourth Eagle ever to shoot multiple career rounds under par, joining Tara Allen (5x), Connie Pitenis (2x) and Fabys Barreto-Guzman (2x). Thielen finished the tournament with a 150 (79-71), good for 22nd place overall.
Kelly Harris (79-79=158) and
Megan Pollenz (72-86=158) tied for 55th place overall for the Blue and Gold, while
Daniela Pena (78-82=190) rounded out the Eagles scorers.
Marlena Weatherly finished the two-day event with a 162 (81-81), and the pair of
Natalie Brooks (77-90=167) and
Camila Sierra (88-84=172) played as individuals. For Sierra, it marked the fourth consecutive round in which she shot her season-best round of the season.
"This was a decent end to the fall season for us," Head Coach
Maria Lopez said. "There were a couple that got away from us, but we fought hard throughout. It was a solid tournament and we competed until the end."
Defending NCAA II National Champion Barry (292-293=585) won the 18-team event, followed by fellow SSC school Tampa (293-293=586), Wingate (293-299=592), Lee (303-293=596) and Tarleton State (302-295=597) in the top five.
The Blue and Gold will have the rest of the fall and winter to prepare for the bulk of its 2017-18 season. The Eagles will return to St. Augustine in February to take part in the World Golf Invitational (Feb. 4-5) at the Slammer & Squire course. ERAU will, for the first time, be eligible for both the Sunshine State Conference and NCAA II postseason tournaments in the spring season.
