Sailfish Spoil @ERAUBaseball's Comeback with 9-5 Series-Opening Win

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team climbed all the way back from a 5-0 deficit on Friday night at Sliwa Stadium, tying Palm Beach Atlantic on a clutch, two-run homer from Cody Bogart in the eighth, but the Salifish (4-1) rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth to send ERAU (2-2) to a 9-5 loss in the weekend's series opener. For the third time in four games the Eagles rallied in the eighth, and appeared to take all the momentum into the final inning, but PBA strung together four hits in the final frame to win its fourth straight game.

Bogart's blast down the left field line in the home eighth capped a five-run comeback that started in the fourth when Christopher Medina singled to right to plate Jonathan Camp from second after he had doubled earlier in the inning, making it 5-1 PBA. All five of PBA's early runs came in the second inning off of Eagle starter Austin Lee, and all came with two outs.

Lee was able to battle through the third, fourth and fifth innings, and the ERAU offense trimmed the lead to two runs in the last of the fifth as Camp singled up the middle, just past PBA's shortstop's glove, scoring both Cole Habig and Kyle Guttveg after the pair reached via catcher's interference and a single, respectively.

Lee gave way to Vincent Rosace with two outs in the sixth, and Rosace kept the deficit at two runs through the seventh. ERAU threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Guttveg and Camp stood on the corners with two outs, but Sam Shield was able to induce a deep fly ball from Zach Howard that stayed in the park, sending the game to the eighth, 5-3 in favor of the visitors.

Tim Retamoza worked a perfect top of the eighth for the Blue and Gold before Shields got two quick outs in the last of the frame. Justin Franklin drew a two-out walk before Bogart pinch hit for Habig and the junior catcher delivered the first pinch hit home run, a monster shot down the left field line, since John Libretti against Siena Heights on March 1, 2010.

Noah Johnson started the PBA ninth off with a perfect bunt down the third base line, and following a sacrifice bunt, Retamoza struck out Kyle Simon for the second out of the inning. A double down the left field line from Peter Rivera drove in the winning run, but the Sailfish added three more insurance runs in the inning to account for the 9-5 final.

Retamoza (1-1) got the loss in 1.2 innings of relief, while Lee went 5.2 innings, scattering 10 hits with six strikeouts. Rosace and Kenny Burkhead each worked scoreless outings on the mound.

Camp finished 2-for-3 at the plate also walking twice with two RBIs and a run score. Bogart, who now leads the Eagles with five RBIs on the year, recorded his first career home run for ERAU.

The Eagles and Sailfish are back at it again tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 11 for a twin bill starting at 1 p.m.
