SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team dropped two games to No. 8 Saint Leo on Saturday. In the first game, the Eagles battled the Lions through nine innings but ultimately fell 3-2. Saint Leo bested the Eagles in game two, scoring eight runs to the Eagles three. Embry-Riddle drops their record to 4-10 and the Lions improve to 14-3.
GAME 1 - SLU 3, ERAU 2 (9 innings)
The Eagles loaded the bases in the first inning driving in one run but the Lions answered back with a two-out two-run home run ending the inning with Saint Leo up 2-1.
In the second inning,
Gabriella Obia singled and was batted in by
Eryn Chester's double to tie the game at two. The Lions were held at a 2-2 tie after a three-up, three-down inning in the bottom of the second.
Scoring ceased after the second inning with both teams leaving runners on base but remaining unable to knock in the tie-breaking run, forcing the game into extra innings.
The game was stuck in its stalemate until the ninth inning when Saint Leo's lead-off batter, Samantha Ohmie, hit a walk-off home run to end the game in a 3-2 loss for the Eagles.
Ilona Andringa (3-4) took the loss giving up three runs and four hits with one walk and career-high 15 strikeouts. Obia went 2-for-3 with one run while Chester went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and one run. Embry-Riddle left 14 runners on base throughout the nine innings.
GAME 2 - SLU 8, ERAU 3
The Eagles came out strong in the top of the first inning scoring three runs with Simon's RBI scoring Chester and Funk's two-run single knocking in
Jayla Jackson and
Maggie Scott. The Lions retaliated with three runs of their own to tie the game 3-3.
The Eagles gave up one unearned run in the second inning, allowing Saint Leo to take a 4-3 lead.
The Lions bumped the score to 6-3 third inning with a two-run play.
The Blue and Gold held the Saint Leo to their three-run lead through the fifth inning but could not find the at-bats to bring in any runs of their own.
The Lions widened the gap with a two-run triple the sixth inning, boosting their lead to 8-3.
Embry-Riddle could not drive home any runs and the game ended in an 8-3 loss.
Simons (1-6) took the loss giving up six hits and four runs with two strikeouts in two innings and went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI.
Dana Rowley pitched the final four innings and gave up six hits and four runs with three walks and five strikeouts. Chester, Scott and
Jayla Jackson each scored one run for the Eagles while Funk had two RBIs and a double.
The Eagles host their home opener against Florida Tech on Friday, March 3 at 6 p.m.
