DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle Eagles shut out the American International Yellow Jackets twice in a doubleheader on Tuesday. The Blue and Gold won game one 5-0 and game two 3-0. Their record improves to 15-13 while the Yellow Jackets become 2-6.
GAME ONE – ERAU 5, AIC 0
The Blue and Gold took the lead with two runs in the third inning. With two outs and
Maggie Scott and
Eryn Chester on first and second base, a wild pitch allowed them both to advance one base.
Anna Battison came to the plate and hammered a single to score the two runners. A triple by
Kendall Funk scored Battison to put the Eagles up 3-0.
The Eagles held off AIC with pitcher
Ilona Andringa never facing more than four batters in an inning.
In the fifth inning, the Eagles put two additional runs on the board. Scott reached base with a single, Chester reached on an error and after an AIC pitching change, Simons singled in Scott. Chester was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice while Simons advanced to third. With only one out, a fielder's choice by Funk brought Simons in to score the fifth and final run of the game.
Andringa gave up one double in the seventh inning but the Yellow Jackets could not get anything started and the game ended in a 5-0 shutout by the Eagles.
Andringa (9-6) earned her ninth win of the season and got her fourth shutout, giving up no runs and two hits, striking out nine. Scott batted a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored while Simons finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Battison was 1-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and two RBIs.
GAME TWO – ERAU 3, AIC 0
Both teams had ample opportunities to score but left runners on base (ERAU – 5, AIC - 4) in the first five innings. It wasn't until the sixth inning that the Blue and Gold managed to push through three runs to break the stalemate.
After a triple to lead off the sixth inning, Battison was singled in by
Jayla Jackson.
Gabriella Obia, who reached on a walk, was brought home on
Destiny Carroll's single to put the Eagles up 2-0 and then Scott walked with the bases loaded to push through the third run for the Blue and Gold.
The Eagles retired the side in the seventh inning to secure their 3-0 victory.
Simons earned the win with her second shutout and improved her record to 6-7. She gave up only two hits and struck out a season-high 12. Chester finished 2-for-4 at the plate while Carroll was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Eagles continue their home stand as they face the Tampa Spartans this weekend in a three-game series with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.
