Big Inning Hurts @ERAUBaseball in 12-6 Loss to Argonauts

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A seven-run third spelled doom for the Embry-Riddle baseball team on Wednesday afternoon at Sliwa Stadium. The Eagles (9-15) equaled West Florida (13-10) in the hit column, even getting a pair of home runs from Zach Howard and Luis Olivier late, but the Argos' 10-run lead after six was more than enough as the visitors held on 12-6, completing the two-game sweep of ERAU.

Wednesday's loss was the fifth straight home setback for the Blue and Gold, marking the first time that has happened for the Eagles since the 1995 season. ERAU will look to bounce back this weekend as they travel to Lakeland to take on perennial power Florida Southern in a three-game set.

ERAU actually grabbed a short-lived lead in the second when Robbie Hanlon executed a squeeze bunt with Howard at third, scoring the sophomore for a 2-1 Eagle cushion. However, the Argos reclaimed the lead in the third, sending 12 men to the plate, scoring seven runs on six hits and three crucial Eagle errors for an 8-2 advantage.

The home team couldn't get anything more against UWF starter Jackson Smith and the Argos' first reliever Brian Browning, but UWF did tag on two runs each in the fifth and sixth for a 12-2 cushion.

Howard led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer down the left field line against J.A. Harville, and Olivier mashed his fourth homer of the season in the ninth, a three-run shot against Harville that made it 12-6, but it proved to be too little, too late as UWF held on for the six-run victory.

Austin Lee (2-4) was tagged with the loss, despite giving up just two earned runs, while eight total Eagle pitchers saw action. Olivier finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, setting an ERAU freshman record with his fourth long ball of the season. Jonathan Camp, Cody Bogart and Howard each collected two hits for the Blue and Gold.
