DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – The Embry-Riddle softball team split a doubleheader against the Trojans of Mount Olive on Monday. The Eagles record is now 8-11 and the Trojans move to 12-12 on the season.
GAME ONE – UMO 5, ERAU 2
The Trojans stole the lead in the first inning with a two-out home run to score two. The Eagles answered with a run batted in by
Kendall Funk's sacrifice fly to end the inning 2-1 in favor of UMO.
Mount Olive extended their lead with another two-run home run in the third inning and an RBI single in the fourth that brought the score to 5-2.
The Eagles left six runners on base in the following five innings, but could not find the at-bats to push any more runs through.
The Trojans scored one additional run due to an Eagle error to end the game in a 6-2 loss for the Blue and Gold.
Ilona Andringa (6-5) took the loss, tossing 11 strikeouts and giving up six runs off of six hits.
Kendall Funk finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI while Battison also had an RBI and was 1-for-2.
GAME TWO – ERAU 8, UMO 0
The Eagles took a big lead in the first inning bringing in four runs after shutting down the Trojans three-up, three-down.
The Eagles led 5-0 after the second, tacking on one additional run when
Gabriella Obia walked with the bases loaded.
The third inning saw the Blue and Gold increase its lead once again when
Kassidy Simons blasted a home run over the left-center field fence bringing in three runs for an 8-0 lead.
The Trojans managed to get runners on base in the fourth inning, but a diving catch by
Maggie Scott in center field ended the inning scoreless for UMO.
The Eagles did not push through any additional runs, but another three-up, three-down inning for the Trojans ended the game in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.
Simons (2-6) earned the win for the Eagles giving up only one hit and striking out one runner each inning for five total strikeouts. Simons was also 2-for-3 at the plate scoring three runs and batting in four runners. Scott hit a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a double.
The Eagles return for more home action on Wednesday, March 8 as they take on Lander University in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
