DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle volleyball team upped its overall record to 4-3 and evened its conference mark at 2-2 this year, but the Eagles also maintained a perfect 4-0 ledger in matches played on a Saturday by sweeping visiting Barry 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-21) at the ICI Center on Saturday. The Bucs suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to 3-1 (1-1).
Melanie Canfield led all players with 12 kills and
Erika Barbour also reached double-figures with 11, while
McKenna James chipped in six kills and four blocks and
Ella Duggan added a match-best five blocks (one solo).
Alyssa Rudd led all players with 30 assists and
Olivia Roa picked up a match-high 13 digs.
The Eagles started strong, winning five of the first six rallies to open up an early 5-1 lead. The Blue and Gold maintained that lead until late in the set when Barry went on a 7-1 run to pull ahead, 21-20. A service error gave ERAU the serve back at a level score of 21-21, and the Eagles took advantage of the opportunity, scoring the next four points to win the set, 25-21.
Set two was an offensive shootout with both teams hitting over .320. The Eagles racked up 15 kills against five errors, hitting .333, while Barry had 13 kills and only four errors, hitting .321. The Bucs held an early 7-3 advantage, but the Eagles quickly came back and tied it at 8-8 on a Canfield service ace. BU quickly regained the lead, though the advantage would shift back to ERAU's side after a 3-0 run made it 13-12. Barry was able to tie the set six times from that point, but never retook the lead. ERAU fended off a late BU rally that evened the score at 22; the Eagles responded with three straight points, including back-to-back service aces from Roa to end the set with a 25-22 win.
The third set was the polar opposite of set two. While the offenses for both clubs were clicking in set two, it was the defenses for both sides that took center stage in set three. The two sides combined for 11.5 blocks, including 8.5 by the Eagles, which contributed to both teams hitting negative in the frame. BU had seven kills and hit -.111, while the Eagles had only three kills and hit -.095. The Eagles took an early 5-1 lead on the strength of three blocks by Duggan and maintained a solid cushion until the latter stages when BU rattled off five straight points to tie the set at 19. A service error gave ERAU the lead but Barry scored two more points to take a 21-20 lead. Another service error put ERAU in position to do what they did in set one, which was to finish the set on a scoring run from the service line, and that's exactly what
Maile Spenser did. The Blue and Gold finished the match winning five straight points to take the final set, 25-21, sweeping the match.
The Eagles hit the road next week for a pair of SSC matches. ERAU begins the week with a Tuesday tilt at Rollins at 7 p.m. and caps the week at Lynn on Friday, Sept. 29, also at 7 p.m.
