MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle volleyball team looked to rebound from Tuesday's loss when the Eagles traveled to face Barry on Friday night.
After the Eagles (11-6, 5-5 Sunshine State Conference) came out on the wrong side of the first two sets, Barry (16-3, 8-2 SSC), who is receiving votes in the NCAA D II Top-25 poll, was able to complete the 3-0 (27-25, 29-27, 25-18) sweep against ERAU.
Erika Barbour led the ERAU attack with 13 kills.
Theresa Jordan was not far behind with 11 kills of her own.
Alyssa Rudd tallied 33 assists, while Jordan and
Olivia Roa led the Eagles with 11 digs in the match.
Barry got off to a quick start, as the Buccaneers got out to an 11-6 lead in the first set. Two attacking errors and a kill by
McKenna James, made the score 11-9, however, the Buccaneers would go on a 6-0 run to retake control of the set.
What looked like an easy set win for Barry nearly turned into a comeback win for the Eagles. With Barry leading 22-16, ERAU began clawing its way back into the match. A 4-0 run and a 5-0 run, split by two Buccaneer kills, gave the Eagles a 25-24 lead. It would be short-lived as Barry would end the set with three unanswered points to win set one, 27-25.
The roles of both teams were switched in the second set. The Blue and Gold were in control for most of the set, but Barry continued to remain within striking distance. With the score at 23-18, it looked like ERAU was prepared to tie the match, however, the Buccaneers refused to go away. Five straight points, including four attacking errors, tied the game at 23.
The Eagles had three chances to put the set away, but Barry stayed alive. The Buccaneers would complete the comeback to win the second set 29-27. ERAU struggled to get clear chances to attack, as Barry had nine blocks in the second set alone, including five down the stretch.
Barry kept its momentum going into the third set. The Buccaneers would not look back after taking a 2-1 lead early in the set. They would win the set 25-18 to complete the 3-0 sweep. ERAU was outhit by the Buccaneers .333. to .118 in the final set.
The Eagles would struggle to compete with the Buccaneer front line who totaled 17 blocks in the match. Barry also outhit ERAU .227 to .155 in the match.
The Blue and Gold continues its road trip tomorrow when they face Lynn. The match in Boca Raton will start at 4 p.m.
