DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team erupted for three second-half goals to take a 3-2 win over Florida Tech (6-6-1, 3-3) in Sunshine State Conference action, Saturday at the ERAU Soccer Stadium. The Eagles got two goals from
Eva Jonsdottir and another from
Ragnheidur Gardarsdottir to improve to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in league play.
The first half was played evenly with the Panthers holding a 6-4 edge in shots, while the Eagles had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks, but it was Florida Tech who was able to tally the only score of the period. In the 35
th minute, Keira McCarthy capitalized on one of those six chances and put the Panthers up 1-0 with a shot from just outside the box.
The Blue and Gold came out firing in the second frame, including a long-range strike by
Julia Olsson that was blocked by the Panther defense and a header by
Emmie Johansson that was just wide of the mark.
ERAU was finally able to break through in the 68
th minute. The Eagles played a ball up the field that was just out of
Annie Gelnaw's reach, but Gelnaw did not give up on the play, racing to the end line to win the ball from a Panther defender. Gelnaw played the ball back to Johansson who delivered a sliding touch to Jonsdottir and she rocketed a shot past Sanchez-Recuero to bring the Eagles level at 1-1.
Just four minutes later Jonsdottir struck again. The play started with
Maria Schmiedhofer who picked her way through the Florida Tech defense before getting a short pass to Jonsdottir at the top of the box. Standing at almost the exact same spot as her first shot of the evening, Jonsdottir rifled another strike into the net to put the home team ahead 2-1.
Florida Tech tied things up on a corner kick, but the Eagles answered just 23 seconds later when Gelnaw's cross from about 30 yards out got to Gardarsdottir on the far post and the sophomore tapped in her first goal of the year to secure the 3-2 win for ERAU.
"First I'd like to give credit to Jessica," ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon said. "She's done a good job assuming the head coaching position and has their team moving in the right direction.
"I was pretty pleased tonight with about 65-70 minutes of play. We had a better start tonight but needed to be a little more precise with our final pass. We came out in the second half and kept the pressure on them really well. It was nice to finally see it pay off with goals by our Icelandic connection. This was an important win for us and I'm very pleased with how this team keeps progressing each game."
The Eagles will be on the road for their next two games, beginning with a 7 p.m. fixture at the University of Tampa on Oct. 10.
