DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team opened its first season as a full-fledged member of NCAA II with a 9-0 win over Southeastern, Thursday at ERAU's Crotty Tennis Complex.
The Eagles gained an early 3-0 advantage as the Fire only had four individuals available for Thursday's contest, which meant they had to forfeit the matches at No. 3 doubles, and No. 5 and No. 6 singles. The Eagles' fourth point came at No. 2 doubles where
Maria Turrillo and Sabrina Ehrenfort blanked Nicole Beckherms and Sydni Brookhouser 8-0.
At No. 1 doubles, the Eagles' Roberta Krvajica and
Georgina Wood jumped out to a 6-1 lead over Sharienne Ricardo and Angelique Myrtil. The SEU tandem battle back to within a point (7-6), but the Eagles broke the Fire in the final game to win 8-6.
Turrillo and Ehrenfort recorded shutouts at the third and fourth singles spots, respectively, and Wood followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Myrtil at No. 2. Krvajica easily won her first set 6-1, but had to hold off a fierce battle from Ricardo to win 7-5 in the second set.
The Eagles' next match is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday when they host No. 25 Valdosta State at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
