TAMPA, Fla. - A late second-half run pushed Tampa past the Embry-Riddle men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon, 87-84. The Eagles (10-16, 4-14 SSC) dropped their fifth straight and moved to 0-9 on the road in 2017-18, while the Spartans (9-15, 5-13 SSC) snapped a two game losing streak thanks to a career performance from Marcel Robinson.
Robinson, who finished with a career-high 35 points, hit the biggest shot of the game when he buried his sixth three-pointer at the 1:12 mark of the second half, turning a two-point Tampa lead into a five-point cushion at 87-82. The Eagles got an offensive put-back from
Cole Hunter to get within a possession, and after Duke Shelton missed the front-end of a one-and-one, the Eagles raced to the the other end of the court where
Rudy Bibb-Boyd came up short on a trey that would have tied it with eight seconds to go. Again Shelton missed the front-end of a free throw trip, but an offensive rebound by Robinson was enough for the Spartans to run out the clock.
The Eagles needed to claw from behind late because the home team went on a big, 9-0 run starting at the nine-minute mark after
Nashad Mackey had tied the game at 66-66 with a layup. The Spartans, in the midst of making 10 straight field goals, found themselves up 75-66 before an
Elijah Jenkins triple stopped the run. ERAU was able to get within 82-79 on a pair of Hunter free throws, but a Shelton layup preceded the Robinson triple as Tampa held on for the season sweep of the Eagles.
The Spartans, who entered Saturday's game last in the league at 7.6 made three-pointers per game, connected on 13, following their 16 made three-point attempts in the team's first meeting back in December. Robinson led the way with six treys, while Anthony Gamble added four from long range as the Spartans shot 59 percent from beyond the arc.
The Eagles took a six-point lead into the break, thanks to big first periods from Hunter (11 points, five rebounds) and
Rudy Bibb-Boyd (11 points, four boards), and the visiting team even went up by 10 early in the second half on a Bibb-Boyd three at the 18:03 mark to make it 51-41. However, Tampa answered with a 12-4 run over the next four minutes before taking the lead for good on a John Whitaker three at the 8:41 mark.
Mackey collected his 21st double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while
Luka Majstorovic finished with 19 points and eight boards. Bibb-Boyd scored 17 points with a career-best six rebounds and Hunter went for a career-high 16 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field.
The Eagles will have one more chance to get a road win on Wednesday, Feb. 21 when they pay Florida Tech a visit in Melbourne for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
