DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team closed out the 2017-18 season on Saturday with a 104-97 loss to visiting Florida Southern. The Eagles end the season with an 11-17 record including a 5-15 mark in SSC play, while the Mocs will head to the conference tournament with a 19-9 overall record and a 13-7 mark in Sunshine State Conference games.
Nashad Mackey notched his 23rd double-double of the season with 26 points and 14 rebounds while
Luka Majstorovic scored a career-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists.
Rudy Bibb-Boyd chipped in with 18 points and
Brian Johnson and
Joshua Hawkins each tallied 12 points.
The Eagles got off to a strong start, running out to an 11-5 lead just over three minutes into the contest. The lead grew as large as eight (15-7) on a Bibb-Boyd layup with 15:50 to play in the half, but FSC quickly rattled off eight straight points in 1:23 to tie the game at 15-15. The Mocs took their first lead of the game at 20-18 with 12:19 left in the period, but the Blue and Gold answered back and retook the lead on a Majstorovic layup, putting the Eagles up 32-30 with just over five minutes to play before halftime. Embry-Riddle stretched its advantage to 45-37 by the time the first half came to a close.
Hawkins opened the second half with a bucket to give ERAU its first double-digit lead (47-37) and a Majstorovic jumper pushed it to 11 (53-42) less than minutes into the period. The Eagles held a double-digit lead with 13:24 on the clock (62-52), but from that point, Florida Southern went on a 16-4 run to take a 68-66 lead with 8:59 left. The Eagles quickly took the lead back and extended their cushion to as many as seven points (83-76) with just over five minutes left in the game. The Mocs came back with another quick run, outscoring the Eagles 13-4 in the span of two minutes to take an 89-87 lead. A Mackey layup 17 seconds later tied the game at 89, but the Eagles would never regain the lead. FSC was efficient in the late stages of the contest, making its last nine field goals and 12 of its final 14 free throws over the final 6:48, allowing the visitors to pull away for a 104-97 victory.
