DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday, falling to NCAA I Iowa State (5-1) 4-3 at the Crotty Tennis Complex. Playing according to Division I rules, the Eagles lost the doubles point and split 3-3 with the Cyclones in singles to move to 1-1 on the year.
The first doubles match to finish was on court three where Erin Freeman and Annabella Bonadonna bested ERAU's Sabrina Ehrenfort and
Lydia Carter 6-0. Maty Cancini and Regina Espindola secured the doubles point for the Cyclones by holding off Roberta Krvajica and
Georgina Wood 6-4.
The match at No. 2 doubles saw
Maria Turrillo and
Kathryn Bock stay close to Margarita Timakova and Ekaterina Repina for the majority of the contest, but the ISU tandem won three straight games for a 7-5 win.
At No. 6 singles,
Lydia Carter won the first set 6-3 and earned the Eagles' first point of the day when her opponent, Liera Bender, retired due to injury.
Bonadonna broke the tie with a win over Bock at No. 5 singles and Cancini extened the ISU margin to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Turrillo at the top spot.
Krvajica pulled the Eagles within a point with her 7-5, 6-3 defeat of Espindola on court two, and Ehrenfort battled Freeman to a 7-6 (3) win in the first and was ahead 2-1 in the second at No. 4. However, Repina was able to get the better of the match-up against Wood, topping the ERAU sophomore 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the win for the Cyclones.
Next up for the Eagles is a noon match on the road against Eckerd on Saturday.
