MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team played a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against the Florida Tech Panthers. The Eagles split the games, winning game one by a final score of 10-6 and lost game two 2-1. ERAU moves to 17-6 overall and 9-3 in Sunshine State Conference play, while the Panthers go to 14-12 and 3-6 in conference play.
Game 1
The Eagles were hitting the ball over all over the field in game one, having four multi-run innings and clubbed 16 hits in the contest.
Kailah Rain hit an RBI single to left to bring in
Maggie Scott. Rain managed to steal home, after a sac bunt and a fielding error by the Panthers.
Embry-Riddle put up two more runs in the top of the second.
Lisa Hop had an RBI single to right center to score
Destiny Carroll.
Maggie Scott knocked in Hop on an RBI double to left center. However, Florida Tech would make up the deficit in one inning, scoring five runs to take the lead 5-4 going into the third.
The Eagles tacked on another run in the top of the third thanks to a bases-loaded fielders choice by
Destiny Carroll. ERAU took the lead in the fourth scoring two more runs in the fourth.
Mariana Pereira hit a two-RBI single down the right-field line to score
Maggie Scott and
Mackie Chandler. Florida Tech countered in the bottom half of the fourth thanks to an RBI single to left. After five innings of play, The Eagles were up 7-6.
The Eagles put the game away in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs.
Mackie Chandler hit an RBI single to left center to score
Eryn Chester. Scott reached on a fielder error by the Panthers allowing Carroll to score.
Kailah Rain scored the final run of the game with an RBI infield single. ERAU kept Florida Tech in-check and did not allow them to score in the final three innings, securing the 10-6 victory.
Elisha Barker won her first game of the season for the Blue and Gold, making her first appearance of the season. Barker pitched two and two-thirds innings, allowed two runs (one earned), on three hits and struck out two.
Jayla Jackson and
Lisa Hop also pitched in this game as well. Jackson started the game, pitching one and one-third innings, allowed four runs (three earned), one hit and four walks. Hop pitched three innings, gave up no runs, one hit, walked three and struck out four.
Six different Eagles had multiple hits in the first game of the doubleheader.
Mackie Chandler went 3-3 with one run and one RBI.
Maggie Scott hit 2-5 with three runs, two RBIs, and three stolen bases.
Kailah Rain batted 2-4 with one run, two RBIs, and one stolen base.
Destiny Carroll went 2-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Eryn Chester hit 2-3 with one run.
Mariana Pereira went 2-4 with two RBIs.
Game 2
The bats cooled off in the second contest of the afternoon, with both teams combining for just three runs. The Eagles picked up their first two hits of the game in the top of the second.
Katy Thompson doubled to left center and
Peqe Lopez singled up the middle. Embry-Riddle stranded Thompson and Lopez on second and third and was tied with the Panthers entering the third. Florida Tech broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the sixth, scoring off an RBI double down the left field line and an RBI single to left. Florida Tech was leading 2-0 going into the final inning of play.
The Eagles had to come from behind if they were to pull off the victory.
Eryn Chester started the comeback attempt, hitting an RBI single through the left side. Rain doubled to right center advancing Chester to third with no outs. Thompson popped out for the first out of the inning. B. Limon hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Chester and advance Rain to third. Lopez grounded out to second to end the game and the Eagles fell by a final score of 2-1
Ilona Andringa picked up her fifth loss of the season for the Blue and Gold. Andringa pitched six innings, allowed two runs, one hit and struck out four. The Eagles only had four hits in the entire contest. Chester, Rain, Thompson, and Lopez all went 1-3 at the plate with Chester scoring the lone run. This is just the sixth loss of the season for the Eagles and was the third conference loss.
Embry-Riddle returns to action on Wednesday, March 7 to take on Young Harris College. It will be a doubleheader between the two schools with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 3 p.m.
