DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team got back to its winning ways on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the University of South Carolina Aiken Pacers in both games of a doubleheader. The Eagles won game one handily, winning by a final score of 15-3. In game two,
Ilona Andringa threw the first perfect game in Embry-Riddle softball history as the Eagles won 6-0. ERAU improves to 19-6 overall while USC Aiken falls to 8-18.
Game 1
The bats were unstoppable for the Eagles throughout the afternoon, combining for 21 runs for both games. The Blue and Gold offense came alive early, putting up 13 runs in the first and second innings alone.
Kailah Rain got things started for the Eagles, hitting a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the first to score
Maggie Scott and
Eryn Chester.
Mariana Pereira hit an RBI single to center to bring in Rain.
Peqe Lopez reached on a fielding error by the Pacers' second baseman, allowing Pereira to score. Lopez scored on a throwing error to second by the USC Aiken catcher.
Destiny Carroll scored the final run of the inning after
Lisa Hop grounded out to the shortstop.
Embry-Riddle continued to pour it on, scoring seven more runs in the bottom of the second. Pereira hit a two-RBI single to right center field to score Rain and Scott. Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Pereira. Hop singled to left to score
Katy Thompson.
Mackie Chandler had an infield single to score Carroll. Scott came up for the second time in the inning, hitting a two-RBI triple to left to score Hop and Chandler. Going into the top of the third the Eagles were in control 13-0.
The Pacers managed to score one run in the third on a fielding error by Chandler. USC Aiken picked up two more runs in the top of the fourth, scoring thanks to a bases-loaded walk and fielders choice. Embry-Riddle countered with two more runs in bottom half of the inning after a costly throwing error by the Pacers third basewomen, which allowed Hop and Scott to score. The Eagles held USC Aiken scoreless in the top of the fifth, securing the 15-3 victory for the Blue and Gold.
Ilona Andringa picked up her 11th win of the season in the process. Andringa pitched three innings, allowed two hits, one run (unearned), and struck out five batters.
Lisa Hop made the relief appearance for the Eagles, pitching two innings allowing two runs (one earned), off two hits, walked three and struck out two. Scott was a perfect 4-4 at the dish today, hitting one double, one triple, scored three times and drove in two runs. Pereira went 3-4, scoring twice and drove in three. Hop hit 2-3, scoring twice and picking up two RBIs.
Game 2
Andringa dominated game two of Tuesday's doubleheader, throwing the first perfect game in Embry-Riddle softball history! Andringa made it look easy, throwing just 81 pitches and striking out 13 batters. She picked up her 12th win of the season thanks to the perfect game. Andringa benefited greatly from the Eagles offense, as she was able to pitch with a lead the entire contest. ERAU scored its first run in the bottom of the second with Chester drawing a bases loaded walk to score Chandler. Going into the top of the third the Eagles lead 1-0.
Embry-Riddle tacked on three more runs in the fourth thanks to a Chester RBI single and a two-RBI double by Rain. The Eagles picked up two more runs in the bottom of the sixth with Pereira scoring on some savvy base running and a
Destiny Carroll RBI single through the left side. The Eagles won game two by a final score of 6-0.
Hop went 2-3 with, hitting a double and scoring one run. Carroll went 1-2, drawing two walks and drove in one.
Katy Thompson and Pereira both hit 1-3 and scored once. Chester hit 1-3, scoring once and drove in two. Rain and Chandler both went 1-4 as Rain drove in two runs and Chandler scored once.
Embry-Riddle returns to action on Friday, March 16 to take on Sunshine State Conference foe Florida Southern. It will be game one of a three-game series between the two schools as first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
