DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse team got a hat trick each from
Erin Bryenton,
Mya Watson and
McKenzie Jackson at the Embry-Riddle Lacrosse Field on Thursday, but it was not enough to secure a win as the Eagles fell to Saint Leo 23-13 in ERAU's first-ever Sunshine State Conference contest.
Embry-Riddle fell to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in the SSC, while Saint Leo improved to 10-2 and 1-0 in league play.
Embry-Riddle trailed 4-0 to start the contest, but the Eagles scored five goals in a four-minute span to get themselves back in the game, and at the 13:25 mark of the first half, the score was tied at 6-6. The Lions added a pair to go up 8-6 and after Bryenton tallied the Eagles' seventh goal of the game, Saint Leo scored three unanswered to close out the first half with a 10-7 lead.
Each side registered a goal to start the second half, but a five-goal run by the Lions allowed the visitors to widen the gap to 17-8. Watson and
Gillian Greenberg broke up the scoring spurt with a goal apiece, but Saint Leo outscored the Eagles 5-2 in the latter part of the frame to come away with the win.
Jackson, who had her 11th game with three or more goals, paced the Eagles with 13 draw controls as ERAU won the draw 25-12. Saint Leo outshot the Blue and Gold 45-32 and picked up 31 ground balls to 21 by the Eagles. Watson, who also recorded her 11th hat trick, and
Carson Toney contributed two assists each, with Watson going 3-for-5 on free position shots and recording three ground balls.
Skylar Mossop went the distance for the Eagles in goal, collecting a season-high 17 saves. Erin Davis got the win for Saint Leo as she combined with Rebecca Halley for 13 stops.
The Eagles will have just two days to prepare for their next game, which will be at home at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Alabama-Huntsville.
