ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team established itself as the best power-hitting team in program history on Saturday as the Eagles hit four long balls, breaking a 20-year single-season record in a 19-4 win over host Eckerd. ERAU (11-25, 2-16 SSC) wrapped up a three-game Sunshine State Conference series against the Tritons (20-18, 10-11 SSC) after dropping both ends of a doubleheader on Friday, 8-6 and 11-2.
Saturday: ERAU 19, EC 4
The Eagles started the day off with some small ball, getting a run in the first inning on a
Kyle Marsh single to score
Kyle Guttveg before Marsh scored on a
Zach Howard sac fly to right. The Tritons came back with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first off of Eagle starter
Garrett Goodall, tying the game at 2-2.
The top of the third was one for the record books for the Blue and Gold as the visitors scored 11 runs (third-most in program history), highlighted by two homers in the frame from Olivier and an inside-the-park home run from Guttveg. Olivier's two-homer feat was just the second time in school history someone has homered twice in one inning as Branden Roper-Hubbert did the same against St. Thomas on April 17, 2010. It was also the first time since 2014 the Eagles recorded an inside-the-park home run.
The first runs of the frame came on a Malone triple and Marsh single before Olivier hit a two-run homer, followed by Guttveg's inside-the-park home run with the bases loaded. Olivier capped the scoring in the inning with a three-run shot to right.
With a 13-2 lead, Goodall cruised through the fourth as the Eagles added three more runs in the fifth as Olivier doubled in Marsh, scoring himself a few batters later on a wild pitch before
Justin Franklin also crossed home on a wild pitch.
A two-run homer from Eckerd in the fifth was the home team's only other runs of the day as Goodall was in control, going eight full innings, holding EC to four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
ERAU added two runs in the seventh on a single from Guttveg and Howard concluded the scoring for the Eagles in the eighth with a solo homer to left, his 15th of the year, tying him with Darryl Knight (2014) for the most in a single season in program history.
With their four home runs on Saturday, the Eagles increased their season total to 47, breaking the single-season record of 44 team home runs set in 1998 with 14 scheduled games left on the season slate.
Guttveg and Olivier each finished with six RBIs, the most for any one player since Jordan Brown's seven RBIs in 2015. Guttveg also drew three walks and scored three runs on the day. Marsh and Olivier also each had three hits and three runs, while Malone reached base three times and scored each time.
Goodall (1-2) got the win for the Blue and Gold, going eight strong frames before
Kyle Miller closed things out with a scoreless ninth.
Friday Game 1: EC 8, ERAU 6
The Eagles nearly completed a big comeback in the ninth inning in the weekend's opener, but ultimately fell 8-6 to open the series.
Eckerd took an early 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the first, but
Cody Bogart gave the Eagles a lead with a two-run shot in the fourth. Eckerd responded with seven unanswered runs over the next three innings to tak an 8-2 lead into the seventh.
Howard got the Eagles a run with a sac fly in the seventh and the visitors tried to make things interesting in the ninth, starting with a one-out solo homer from Marsh, and after Howard walked, Olivier blasted a two-run long ball to left, trimming the deficit to 8-6. Malone and Franklin both reached with two outs to put the tying run on the bases, but
Joe Lucas struck out swinging to end the game as Eckerd held on for the win.
Guttveg, Olivier, Franklin and
Jordan Hicks each had two hits for the Eagles in the loss.
Friday Game 2: EC 11, ERAU 2
The Tritons took control of Friday's nightcap and never looked back, going out to a 6-0 lead before the seventh inning.
Olivier hit a two-run round-tripper in the eighth to get the Eagles on the board, but EC came back with a five-run frame in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.
Cole Habig, Olivier and Franklin each collected two hits for the Blue and Gold in the contest.
Embry-Riddle returns home to host NAIA Keiser (formerly Northwood) on Wednesday, April 18 at 6 p.m. at Sliwa Stadium.
