ROME, Ga. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team got the first win of its 30th season of play when they hit the road to face Shorter on Saturday night.
Two first half goals from
Afonso Martins and Tim Frederik-Lange lifted the Eagles (1-1-0) over the Hawks (0-5-0) for their first win of the season. The ERAU defense earned the clean sheet as the Blue and Gold came away with a 2-0 victory.
Both teams wasted little time getting into the action. Shorter started the game with two quick shots in the first several minutes. Seth Calero nearly gave the Hawks the lead, but his shot was saved by Gudmunder Sigurbjornsson.
The Eagles quickly responded with a counter attack of their own. Tim-Frederik-Lange's first shot was blocked.
Olav Olsen Aamlid attempted a shot off the rebound, but it sailed high.
Both teams combined for eight shots in the first 15 minutes of the match. Thailison Alex tried to break the scoreless tie, but his shot was saved by Sigurbjornsson. Sigurbjornsson quickly sent the ERAU counter attack forward. This resulted in a header by Martins that was saved by Shorter's Sean Carpenter.
It would not be much longer before the tie would be broken. After a Hawk foul, the Blue and Gold were in a position to do damage. Martins found himself in position for another shot on goal. This time he converted, scoring the Eagles' first goal of the season and give ERAU a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Frederik-Lange was credited with the assist.
Shorter tried to respond quickly. Jackson Wheatley had two attempts to score the equalizing goal, but he was unable to find the back of the net.
ERAU kept applying pressure on the offensive end.
Alex O'Brien attempted to add another goal to the cause, but his shot was snuffed out by the Hawk defense. However, Frederik-Lange followed up with an attempt of his own.
Teddy West's pass led to Frederik-Lange's shot which found the back of the net to extend the Eagle lead to 2-0 at the 22nd minute.
An action-packed first half ended with 19 total shots between both squads. The Blue and Gold took the 2-0 lead into the half.
The second half started similarly to the first. Shorter wasted no time mounting its attack. Alex tried to catch the Eagle defense off guard, but his shot was saved by Sigurbjornsson.
Mourad Falahen got to start the second half for ERAU. He tried to make an immediate impact on the game. Eight minutes into the second half, he had an opportunity add to the Eagle lead, however, his shot on goal was saved by Carpenter.
ERAU's defense gave the Hawks few opportunities to get themselves back in the game. The Blue and Gold allowed just three shots in the second half. The Eagles were able to hold their 2-0 lead for the rest of the game.
Frederik-Lange and Falahen led the Eagle attack with three shots each. ERAU outshot Shorter 19-11 in the match.
The Blue and Gold will look to keep the momentum from this win when it starts conference play next week. The Eagles will take on Nova Southeastern on Wednesday. The match kicks off at 6 p.m.
