Sailfish Hold Off @ERAUMBasketball, 80-77

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Elijah Jenkins' three-pointer at the buzzer that would have sent Saturday's game into overtime was just off the mark as the Embry-Riddle men's basketball team dropped its fifth straight, 80-77 at Palm Beach Atlantic. It was three-point shooting again that let the Eagles (8-11, 1-7 SSC) down as the visitors shot just 8-for-30 (27 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Sailfish (6-9, 2-5 SSC) connected on 39 percent from deep, and 49 percent overall to win for just the fourth time in the last 10 meetings against the Eagles.

Embry-Riddle featured four players in double-figures as Alston Jones and Luka Majstorovic each scored 16 points, while Nashad Mackey registered his 30th career double-double with 14 points and 13 boards. Tylin Lockett-Fuller chipped in 12 points for the Blue and Gold.

PBA got out to an early lead, going up 10-2 on a Michael Stones layup with 16:28 left in the first, but ERAU was able to get back into it, going on a 12-6 run over the next four minutes, capped by a Jones and-one to make it 16-14.

The hosts held a couple possession lead for the next few minutes, going up seven several times, including a 31-24 lead with 5:41 on the clock. That was when the Eagles began their comeback, starting with a Lockett-Fuller layup and then back-to-back triples from Lockett-Fuller a little later on put the Eagles in front, 36-34. Neither team led by more than a possession the rest of the first half as PBA hit a layup with less than a second left to take a 42-41 lead into the break.

The second half was a true back-and-forth affair, featuring seven ties and 10 lead changes. The turning point came after a Jenkins three gave the Eagles their last lead of the day at 70-69 with 7:14 to play. The Sailfish went on a 9-0 run as the Eagles struggled from the field going 0-for-6 before Mackey got an offensive put back and-one to make it 78-72, PBA with 2:39 on the clock.

Cj Henagan got the Eagles within a possession with a tey at the 1:41 mark, and the Eagles then got a stop on the defensive end, but Mackey's jumper on the other end wouldn't go as PBA grabbed the rebound. The next possession was key as the Sailfish missed a layup, but a huge offensive rebound and slam by Jules Jasmin pushed their lead to 80-76 with 27 seconds left.

Mackey hit 1-of-2 free throws with 12 ticks left to make it a three-point game and PBA went 0-for-2 at the free throw line to give the Eagles some life, but Jenkins' three was no good as PBA held on for the win.

ERAU will head to Melbourne, Florida to take on Florida Tech on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
