WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team suffered its first Sunshine State Conference loss of the season as the Eagles narrowly fell to seventh-ranked Rollins 1-0, Wednesday at the Tars' Cahall-Sandspur stadium. The loss moves the Eagles to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in league play, while Rollins improves to 9-2 on the year and stays atop the league with a 6-0 SSC ledger.
The stat sheet showed an evenly played gamed with the Eagles holding a 17-16 edge in shots and Rollins edging ERAU 7-4 in shots on frame and 6-5 in corner kicks.
Ragnheidur Gardarsdottir and
Julia Olsson recorded a game-high four shots apiece, with two of Gardarsdottir's attempts testing Rollins goalkeeper Elena Beasley.
The only goal of the night came in the 37th minute when the Tars scored off a direct free kick taken by Sarah Buckley just outside the penalty area.
The Eagles had a few chances to score the equalizer, including a ball that bounced tantalizing in front of the goal before being cleared away by the Tars' defense, and a
Savanna Sheahan rocket in the 83rd minute that elicited a diving save from Beasley.
ERAU netminder
Dana Ruchti pulled in six saves, while Beasley had four stops en route to her eighth win of the season.
"You have to give credit to Alicia and her team," ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon commented. "They worked hard throughout the game and we didn't match it for 90 minutes. We were really disappointed at halftime because we never started playing. We just reacted to plays rather than getting in early positions and anticipating. While the second half was better, we still didn't do a good job of executing our game plan and being precise in the final third. Good games like this don't produce a lot of chances so we need to do a better job with the ones we get. This group is too competitive and wants to grow, so I fully expect a positive response vs PBA."
Up next for the Eagles is a home conference game against Palm Beach Atlantic at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23.
