@ERAUVolleyball Wins Thriller at Nova Southeastern

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After losing the first two sets, the Embry-Riddle volleyball team mounted a furious comeback, winning the final three sets to claim a 3-2 win (17-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 20-18) at Nova Southeastern on Saturday. The victory improves ERAU's record to 15-3, 8-3 in conference, while NSU drops to 13-9, 5-6 in league play.

Jordan Schumacher led the Eagles with 12 kills to go along with 12 digs, while Kristin vom Schemm added 11 kills and 17 digs and Aly Freeland chipped in with a season-high 11 kills and 11 digs. Alyssa Rudd tallied 44 assists and Olivia Roa had a match-high 24 digs.

ERAU won the first three points of the match and didn't trail in the opening set until a 5-0 run pushed Nova Southeastern to a 19-15 lead. The Sharks continued to pull away, ending the first set on a 13-3 run to win it 25-17.

Set two featured seven ties and four lead changes, though the Eagles never led by more than a single point in the frame. NSU took the lead for good at 12-11 and slowly increased its lead, eventually taking the set, 25-20.

In the third set, Embry-Riddle trailed as late as 21-20, but the Blue and Gold rallied to score five of the final six points of the set, including a pair of blocks from Jenna Bishop, earning a 25-22 win.

The Eagles jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in set four and pushed the advantage to as many as seven points at 14-7. The Sharks battled back, going on an 8-2 run to tie things up at 19-19. A Freeland kill broke a 21-21 tie and led to four consecutive Eagle points to end the set at 25-21, tying the match at two sets apiece.

The Blue and Gold hadn't lost in five tries in a fifth set in 2019, and Saturday would prove to be no exception. ERAU jumped out to a 6-2 lead and appeared to be on its way to another comfortable fifth-set win. But NSU battled back, using a 7-2 run to take the lead, 15-14. The Sharks failed to convert on that match point, as well as two others, before Embry-Riddle got its first match point after a Schumacher kill made it 18-17. The Eagles couldn't finish the job on the next rally, but the Blue and Gold got kills from Canfield and Freeland on the next two points to clinch the set, 20-18, keeping its five-set record perfect at 6-0 this season.

The Eagles will return home next Friday, Nov. 1, to host Eckerd in the first of three straight home matches. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
