DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team wrapped up its fall campaign at the 5
thAnnual Juan Varon Wildcat Invitational, Sunday on the clay courts at the Florida Tennis Center.
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Andrej Omeragic headlined the Eagle contingent during the three-day tournament hosted by Bethune-Cookman, with each winning his respective singles flight.
After earning a bye in the first round of the "A" Flight, Ortiz Couder breezed through the next two rounds with wins over Keiser's Juan Marrero (6-1, 6-0) and Stetson's Sven Thiergard (6-3, 6-1). The ERAU senior faced Stetson's Tim Gennes in the title match and bounced back from a second-set setback to win the flight 6-3, 3-6, 10-3.
Playing in the "C" Flight, Omeragic won all four his single matches in straight sets, including a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 decision against Stetson's Josh Laka in the second round. Omeragic's opponent in the championship match was Eastern Florida State's Arthur Roquet. Roquet took his opponents to three sets in each of his preliminary matches, but in the championship, Omeragic bested the EFSC freshman 6-3, 6-1 to win the flight.
Ortiz Couder and Omeragic also advanced to the title matches of their respective doubles flights. Playing in the "A" Flight, Ortiz Couder teamed up with
Andres Donayre for two doubles wins before they fell to Stetson's Clement Hamel and Hillhouse 6-2 in the final. Omeragic and
Tim Loerwink surrendered just five games in their first two matches but were unable to get by Bethune-Cookman's Phillip Lynch and Nicolas Rodriguez (6-2) in the title match of the "B" Flight.
