DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team overcame tough field conditions and the Flagler defense to secure a 2-1 win in overtime Tuesday night at the ERAU Soccer Stadium.
After rain fell for most of the day, the skies cleared for the 41
st all-time meeting between the two schools.
Flagler (1-8-1, 1-3-1 PBC) scored the first goal of the evening in the 18
th minute as Dawson Stephens knocked one in from close range on a ball from Joran Osland for his first goal of the year.
The Eagles (2-5-0, 1-3-0 SSC) would answer just four minutes later in the 22
nd, as
Afonso Martins, making his second start of the season, would find the net on a throw in from
Nathan Hubbs, playing the bounce off a Flagler defender and firing one past the keeper with his right foot from close range to tie things at one all.
That score would hold going into the halftime intermission, as Embry-Riddle outshot the Saints 9-4 in the period. Martins,
Tim-Frederik Lange,
Roberto Whitley and
Teddy West were responsible for all the shots the Eagles attempted in the first 45 minutes of play.
The second half didn't see many chances for either squad to net the go-ahead goal. The Saints managed four shot attempts in the period compared to just one for the Eagles. Stout defense was the order during the second period, as once again, overtime would be needed to determine the outcome.
As the extra period started, Flagler had a chance to end things in the first minute of action, as Stephens, looking for his second goal of the night to end things, clanked a shot off the left post from close range.
The Eagles would get two shot attempts, one from West that was blocked, and another from Whitley, a header that bounced off the crossbar, the second time in the game that was the outcome of an Eagle shot attempt.
With time winding down in the period, West came up with ball off an errant touch from a Flagler defender and managed a pass off to
Alex O'Brien on the far side, who crossed it into the box for Lange, who took care of the rest as he beat the keeper Cameron Heustis for the game-winner with 37 seconds left on the clock for his fourth, and biggest, goal of the season.
Embry-Riddle held a 13-9 advantage in shots in the game, with both teams managing four shots on goal.
Jack Crichton recorded three saves in goal for the Eagles.
The three-game homestand for the Blue and Gold continues on Saturday, as Sunshine State Conference play resumes when the Eckerd Tritons come to Daytona Beach for a 6 PM kickoff.
