Men’s Tennis Falls to Flagler in Top-20 Match-up

Alexis Guedy
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – The latest ITA/NCAA II men's tennis rankings were released on Tuesday afternoon and the listing had Flagler at No. 15 and Embry-Riddle at No. 18. Wednesday's top-20 match-up between the two top-20 teams was as close as the rankings suggested and in the end, it was the Saints who were able to pull out a 4-2 win over the Eagles at the Flagler Tennis Center.

The afternoon started with a win at No. 1 doubles as fourth-ranked Juan Ortiz Couder and Andres Donayre defeated Konstantin Dustmann and Lukas Storck 6-2. At the third doubles position, Luca Bolla and Daniel Arrien tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-3 win over Mickael Faucher and Lucas Bos, meaning the contest at the No. 2 spot would decide the doubles point. The deciding match needed a tiebreaker to determine the outcome and in the end, Felipe Caravalho and Rasmuss Jonsson were able to hold off Andrej Omeragic and Aleix Guedy 7-6 (3) to give the Saints a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

Playing at the fifth singles spot, Faucher tied things up at 1-1 with his 6-3, 6-1 victory over Dustmann. The Saints reclaimed the lead when Jonsson topped Donayre 7-6 (5), 6-2 on court two and Reid Burrows bested Omeragic 6-4, 6-3 on court six.

The final three singles matches all went to three sets. Guedy made it 3-2 with his 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Bolla at the third spot and Juan Ortiz Couder held a 2-1 lead in the third set over Storck on court one. However, Ortiz Couder was unable to finish his match in the clinch-clinch format as the match at No. 4 finished first with Carvalho outlasting Bos 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to clinch the win for Flagler.

The Eagles are back in action at 3 p.m. on Thursday, hosting 14th-ranked Valdosta State at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
