No. 1 Barry Tops Women’s Tennis 6-1

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team put forth a valiant effort, but the Eagles were unable to get by top-ranked Barry, falling 6-1 to the Lady Bucs at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Sunday. The Eagles, who played without their injured No. 2 singles player Roberta Krvajica for the second straight, fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Sunshine State Conference, while Barry improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Barry captured the doubles point by virtue of two quick wins at the second and third doubles positions. Hannah Seizer and Verena Schmid got the first win after downing Mafalda Soares and Sabrina Ehrenfort 6-0 on court three, and Jill Engelmann and Carolin Schmidt followed with a 6-1 win over Alexis Marshall and Georgina Wood on court two.

The match at No. 1 doubles saw ERAU's Itxaso Blanco and Jillian Hobbs go up 6-5 against Eleonore Barrere and Julie Razafindranaly. The Barry duo was able to force a tiebreaker and eventually managed to pull out a 7-6 (9-7) win.

Barrere, ranked 26th nationally in singles, picked up the first singles win for the Bucs with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Marshall on court four.  Patricia Lopez followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Maria Secatore on court six, and Seizer scored the clincher with her 6-2, 6-3 win against Soares at the fifth spot.

Playing at the top spot in the lineup, Blanco scored the Eagles only point of the afternoon, upsetting 17th-ranked Schmid in three sets. Blanco easily took the first set 6-1, but Schmid forced a tiebreaker with a 6-3 win in the second. Blanco was able to pull out a win in her second tiebreaker of the day, besting Schmid 10-7 in the final match off the court.

The Eagles are back at the Crotty Tennis Complex on Wednesday to host Flagler at 3:30 p.m.
