@ERAUBaseball Grinds Out 5-3 Win Over Auburn Montgomery to Wrap Up Spring Break Week

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team got contributions from everyone in the lineup and Payton Rice earned his first win of 2019 as the Eagles downed Auburn Montgomery, 5-3 on Saturday. The Eagles (14-10) collected 11 singles and one triple as everybody in the lineup registered at least one hit against the Warhawks (13-12), while Rice worked through 5.2 innings before Samuel Brunnig took over to record five outs and Dominic Jeancola closed things out for the Blue and Gold.

Rice worked quickly in the first, going three-up, three-down before the Eagles gave him a 1-0 lead on a Kirk Sidwell ground out, scoring Kyle Guttveg from third after he had singled, stole second and moved to third on a gorund ball from Kyle Marsh.

Rice got out of a jam in the second thanks to a nifty 4-3 double play off a line drive, but the Eagle offense couldn't get much going against Troy Jones for AUM, going scoreless in the second and third.

The visitors tied the game in the fourth on three straight singles, but Rice was able to minimize the damage and send his team back into the dugout by stranding runners on the corners with a strikeout.

The Blue and Gold retook the lead in the fifth with a little two-out rally. Jake Malone and John Devine reached on a pair of singles, moving to third and second, respectively, on a wild pitch from Jones, before Marsh walked to load the bases. Sidwell singled deep in the hole to short, scoring Malone, and as the AUM shortstop went to corral the ball, he booted it into left, allowing Devine to touch the plate for a 3-1 lead.

AUM quickly got one back in the sixth, but Brunnig took over with a man at second and two outs, getting a one-pitch foul out to hold the one-run lead.

Cody Forster nearly stole home in the bottom of the sixth, but a good throw from reliver Ryan Burkett to the plate cut him down to end the inning.

Brunnig worked around a two-out walk in the seventh and the Eagles added some insurance in the last of the frame. Devine and Marsh singled to start things off before Sidwell moved them both up with a sacrifice bunt. Luis Olivier flew out to deep left, plating Devine for a 4-2 lead. Zach Howard crushed a two-run homer down the left field line during the next at-bat, but the home plate umpire ruled it foul, forcing Howard back to the plate where he finished off a great at-bat with an RBI single to score Marsh and give the Eagles a 5-2 lead.

Brunnig hit back-to-back batters with one out in the eighth before Jeancola entered to put out the fire. Jeancola walked one before getting a pop up for the second out. Aaron Hill singled to right to score the Warhawks' third run of the contest, but a perfect throw from Cole Habig to the dish allowed Olivier to tag out Sage Smelley for the third and final out of the inning.

Jeancola allowed a single in the ninth, but a strikeout and two ground balls gave him his fifth save of the year, the ninth of his career, and resulted in the 5-3 win for ERAU.

Sidwell (2), Olivier and Howard each had RBIs for the Eagles, while Devine, Marsh and Malone recorded two hits apiece.

ERAU hosts Florida Tech for a three-game Sunshine State Conference series next weekend, starting with a 6 p.m. game on Friday, March 22.
