Women’s Tennis Rallies for 4-3 Win Over SSC Foe Tampa

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team earned its first Sunshine State Conference win of the season on Saturday, downing Tampa (8-3, 1-2) 4-3 at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles trailed 2-0 early in the contest, but earned wins at the first, second, third and sixth singles spots to improve to 5-5 overall an 1-3 in league play.

Doubles play began with a win on court two for Tampa as Corbin Dorsey and Maddie Stephens bested ERAU's Georgina Wood and Alexis Marshall 6-1. Roberta Krvajica and Mafalda Soares evened things up with a 6-4 win over Lilley Nice and Vanina Iordanova at No. 3, but Caroline Lozo and Dakota Busch rallied to edge Itxaso Blanco and Jillian Hobbs at the top spot, 7-6 (5) to secure the doubles point for the Spartans.

Tampa extended its lead to 2-0 when Lozo bested Marshall 6-0, 6-1 on court six. Blanco downed Iordanova 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 for the Eagles' first point of the day, but Stephens reclaimed the two -point cushion for the Spartans with her 6-2, 6-2 win against Sabrina Ehrenfort on court four.

The Eagles took the next two singles points by virtue of straight set wins on courts two and three as Krvajica held off Dorsey 6-2, 7-6 (3) and Wood defeated Lilley Nice 7-5, 6-2 to tie the team score at 3-3.

Playing at the sixth spot, Soares fell behind 4-1 in the first set, but managed to close the gap to 5-4 before dropping the set 6-4 to Busch. Soares trailed again in the second, but this time the freshman was able to overtake her opponent and took the second set 6-4 to force a third. The third set was all Soares. She used the momentum of her second-set win to roll to a 6-1 victory in the third and clinch the win for the Blue and Gold.

The Eagles go on the road on Tuesday, traveling to Winter Park to face Rollins in another SSC contest. The match is schedule for 4 p.m.
