VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Embry-Riddle (5-7) women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 contest to 30th-ranked West Florida (11-6), Saturday at the Valdosta State Tennis Complex on Saturday.
Doubles play saw the Eagles and the Argonauts split the first two matches off the court as ERAU's
Roberta Krvajica and
Mafalda Soares blanked Jennifer Rink and Valeria Mantilla 6-0, and UWF's Karolina Silwanowicz and Gabriela Araujo evened the team score with a 6-1 win over
Georgina Wood and
Alexis Marshall on court two. The Argonauts won the deciding match at the top doubles spot as Berta Bonardi and Diana Vlad bested
Itxaso Blanco and
Jillian Hobbs 6-2.
The first three singles matches to finish all went to the Argonauts to help them secure the win. Mantilla topped Marshall 6-3, 6-2 on court five, followed by Vlad's 6-0, 6-1 win over Soares at No. 6, and top-ranked Bonardi scored the clinching point by topping Blanco 6-2, 6-2 on court one.
The contests at No. 2 and No. 3 singles both went to extra sets. After taking the first set against Araujo 6-4, Wood dropped the second 6-2, before downing the Argonauts' third-flight player 10-5 in the super tiebreaker. The last match off the court featured Krvajica and No. 50 Silwanowicz in a battle at No. 2 singles. Krvajica won the first set 6-4, but Silwanowicz rallied to take the second 6-2 to force a third set. The longest match of the day, went to a tiebreaker in the third and, in the end, it was Krvajica who came out on top 8-6 to win the match.
The Eagles have a quick turnaround for their next game which will be against No. 13 West Alabama at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
