VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team won matches at the first, third and fourth singles positions, but it wasn't enough to get by 13
th-ranked West Alabama who took the match 4-3, Sunday at the Henry B. Anderson Tennis Complex. The 38
th-ranked Eagles are now 5-8 on the year, while the Tigers improved to 9-4.
The Tigers notched wins at the first and third doubles positions to win the doubles point as Daryna Hukasian and Haina Franco topped
Roberta Krvajica and
Mafalda Soares 6-2 on court three, and 12
th-ranked Georgina Salom and Andrea Tomassone bested
Itxaso Blanco and
Jillian Hobbs 6-2 on court one.
The Tigers' first two singles points came on courts five and six as Tomassone topped Marshall 6-0, 6-2 and Araucz downed Soares by the same score. Playing at the second spot, Krvajica led early in both sets, but No. 41 Manseri rallied to clinch the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
The Eagles got their first point of the day when No. 55 Blanco bested the Tigers' top-flight player 6-4, 6-3. Wood pulled out a three-set victory for the Eagles' second point, downing Franco 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 at No. 3. The final match off the court was at No. 4 where
Sabrina Ehrenfort defeated Salom 7-5, 6-2 to cap the scoring.
"In the clinch play format, if you lose the doubles point it's tough to get off to a good start in singles," ERAU Assistant Coach
Chris Wollett said. "Once all six courts got going it was interesting to see who would step up in the beginning. A few courts started slowly and it was a struggle to catch up, but we were able to pull out three solid wins. It was a really good result for Itxaso and was great for Georgina to pull out a super tiebreak win on her court. I was really happy that we were able to finish the day on a positive note with a really good win on Sabrina's court."
The Eagles return to the Crotty Tennis Complex on Wednesday to host No. 28 Flagler at 3:30 p.m.
