Men’s Tennis Drops 5-2 Match to No. 15 West Alabama

VALDOSTA, Ga. – No. 15 West Alabama won the doubles point and four singles matches to take a 5-2 win over the Embry-Riddle men's tennis team, Sunday at the Harry B. Anderson Tennis Center. The loss drops the Eagles to 4-8 overall, while the Tigers improve their record to 11-4 on the year.

It took just 23 minutes for the Tigers to notch their first win of the day as No. 21 Julius Kaverinen and Linus Hotlhey downed Andrej Omeragic and Alexis Guedy 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Playing at the third doubles spot, Mickael Faucher and Blake Rohweder evened things up at 1-1 with their 6-2 win over Erik Nordblom and Noah Johansen.

In the match at No. 2 doubles, the Eagles' Andres Donayre and Lucas Bos fell behind 4-1 before rallying to tie Ilari Vesanen and Henrik Sinkko 5-5. But the West Alabama duo registered a hold and a break in the next two games to win 7-5 and secure the doubles point for the Tigers.

Singles play saw Donayre pull the Eagles level at 1-1 after dispatching Kaverinen 6-2, 6-1 at the top spot, but the Tigers reclaimed the lead when Sinkko topped Rohwder 6-1, 6-3 on court six and made it 3-1 when Illia Dehodiuk downed Bos 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

After dropping the first set 6-4, on court five, Faucher took a 3-0 lead in the second, but he was unable to hold off Nordblom who rallied to win 6-4 and clinch the Tiger victory.

The match at No. 2 singles saw No. 75 Vesanen take the first set 6-4, but Guedy bounced back for a 6-0 win in the second. Vesanen broke Guedy in the first game of the third set and maintained the lead for much of the set. Leading 5-4, Vesanen was serving for the win, but Guedy registered a break to tie the match at 5-5, then held to take a 6-5 lead, and broke Vesanen again to win 7-5.

The Eagles return to Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday when they host Eckerd at the Crotty Tennis Complex. Match time is slated for noon.
