DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team notched its first Sunshine State Conference win of the season on Thursday, downing Florida Southern 4-3 at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The win improved the Eagles to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the SSC, while the Moccasins fell to 3-6 and 1-2 in the league.
The day's play began with an Eagle sweep in doubles. The score was 6-4 in all three matches as Andrej Omergaic and
Alexis Guedy topped Miroslav Cvjetan and John Sakellanides at the top spot, followed by
Lucas Bos and
Mickael Faucher's win over Oscar Sohl and Brian Pham on court two.
Andres Donayre and Blake Rowheder completed the sweep with a win over Tim Becker and Danny Thomas on court three.
Guedy secured the Eagles' second point when he quickly dispatched Victor Ahlbeck 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The next match off the court was at the fifth spot where Pham downed Omeragic 6-2, 6-2 for the Mocs' first point of the day, and Lengard Vossgaetter evened the team score by holding off
Tim Loerwink 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6.
The Eagles wasted little time in regaining the lead, as minutes later, Bos pulled out a three-setter, downing Cvjetan 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 to put ERAU back in front 3-2.
The clinching point came at the No. 1 position and also needed three set to decide the outcome. Donayre dropped the first set to Becker 6-2, but rallied to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 to seal the victory for the Blue and Gold.
The Eagles return to the courts on Saturday, hosting Davis & Elkins at the Crotty Tennis Complex. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
