ST. LEO, Fla. –
Jayla Jackson's complete game in the circle and a sixth inning rally resulted in a 4-1 win for the Embry-Riddle softball team Friday night.
The Belleville high school product allowed no earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts in seven innings pitched for ERAU (12-7, 5-2 SSC). Saint Leo's lone run was unearned after an Eagle error. Jackson also ignited the big sixth inning for ERAU.
A one-out single by the Michigan native gave the Eagles a much-needed baserunner.
Lia Johnson pinch ran for Jackson and scored the following at-bat after an RBI double by
ReAnne Drayton.
Maggie Scott put runners on first and third after an infield single. Drayton gave the Eagles the lead after
Lisa Hop reached on an error.
Katy Thompson kept the rally going with an RBI double. The inning concluded after an RBI single by
Savannah Brockenbrough which gave ERAU a 4-1 lead.
Jackson held the Lion batters at bay in the final two frames as the Eagles earned the conference win. She and Scott led the Blue and Gold with two hits.
Scott also made what could be considered the play of the game in the outfield. Saint Leo (12-11, 5-4 SSC) had the bases loaded with two outs in the second inning. A deep flyball was hit to centerfield, but the Eagle centerfielder chased it down to make the catch and keep it a scoreless ballgame.
Saint Leo broke the scoreless tie in the third inning. It seemed as if ERAU was going to retire the Lions in order, but an error extended the inning and allowed a baserunner to advance to third base. A single followed to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles were unable to catch a break on offense through the first five innings. ERAU put plenty of balls in play, but the Saint Leo defense was nearly flawless.
ERAU did not get a hit in the ballgame until the fourth inning.
Lisa Hop tried to build momentum for the Blue and Gold with a single.
Mariana Pereira followed with a hard-hit ball to deep centerfield; however, the Lions' centerfielder was able to make the difficult catch and double-up Hop at first to end the inning and kill the thought of an Eagle rally.
Five of the Blue and Gold's eight hits came in the sixth inning rally. Jackson's record improves to 6-3 on the year after the win.
ERAU and Saint Leo will finish the series with a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch for game one will take place at 1 p.m.
