ST. LEO, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team upset fourth-ranked Saint Leo in its last match before the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. After winning the doubles point, the Eagles kept the momentum going in singles play to top the Lions 4-3.
The Blue and Gold was forced to come from behind to earn the doubles point. Saint Leo's (15-7, 5-3 SSC) Leonardo Vega and David Perez defeated
Blake Rohweder and
Tim Loerwink 6-3 on court three. The Eagles (8-10, 5-3 SSC) responded with a win on court two as
Lucas Bos and
Mickael Faucher won their match 6-4 to earn ERAU's first win of the day.
Andres Donayre and
Andrej Omeragic's match needed a tiebreaker, but the pair overcame the 23rd-ranked team of Aurel Ciocanu and Willem Van Den Akkur 7-6, 7-3 to clinch the doubles point for ERAU.
Donayre continued his hot start in singles by besting Ghali Mensour on court one 6-1, 6-2. Van Den Akker earned Saint Leo's first point on court four by defeating Faucher 6-3, 6-0. Omeragic bested Noel Kunz 6-1, 7-5 on court three. Ciocanu kept the Lions alive by notching a win on court two over Bos, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Saint Leo's comeback attempt came up short as Rohweder clinched the match for ERAU with a win on court six over Bruno Babic, 6-3, 6-2. Loerwink finished the day by beating Perez 7-5, 1-6, 10-7 on court five.
Today marked the first ERAU men's tennis win over Saint Leo since becoming a member of NCAA DII. The Eagles will compete in the SSC Tournament on April 26.
