ST. LEO, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team played its last regular season match before the Sunshine State Conference tournament against third-ranked Saint Leo on Wednesday.
The Lions took an early lead by winning all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
Itxaso Blanco and
Roberta Krvajica fell to Kristyna Jurkova and Andrea Ivanovic 6-2 on court one.
Georgina Wood and
Jillian Hobbs came up short against Madeleine Gauthier and Nina Furmaniak 6-3 on court two. Lastly,
Alexis Marshall and
Mafalda Soares were bested by Marta Vicens Miquel and Georgia Dobell 6-3 on court three.
Saint Leo (18-4, 8-2 SSC) did not let up in singles play. Blanco lost to Vicens Miquel 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Wood fell to Jurkova 7-5, 6-4, 10-8 on court two. Krvajica lost to Furminiak 6-1, 6-3 at the third position to clinch the match for the Lions. Ivanovic won at the fourth position after
Sabrina Ehrenfort was forced to retire.
Marshall took Gauthier to three sets, but she came up short, 6-2, 1-6, 11-9 on court five. Lastly, Soares lost to Anna Marija Bukina 7-6 (8-0), 6-1.
The Eagles (7-13, 3-7 SSC) will compete in the SSC tournament in Bradenton, Florida, on April 26.
