DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A fourth inning rally, highlighted by
Mariana Pereira's grand slam, was more than enough to lead the Embry-Riddle softball team to a series-opening, 8-2 win against Barry on Friday night.
The Eagles got six of their eight hits in the bottom of the fourth after being held to one hit through the first three frames. It seemed as if there was a pitching duel brewing as both offenses were held at bay early in the game. The ERAU (24-19, 15-13 SSC) bats came alive the second time through the order.
Katy Thompson drove in the first run after Pereira doubled to start the inning. Thompson scored on an RBI single from
Michy Ramos. A walk loaded the bases for
Maggie Scott who came through with a two-RBI single to make it 4-0. Another walk loaded the bases again; however, they did not remain full for long. Pereira sent a deep flyball to right field for a no-doubt grand slam giving the Eagles an 8-0 lead.
Jayla Jackson followed her gem from Wednesday with another impressive performance. Through the first four innings of action, the junior allowed just one hit while striking out five Buccaneers.
Barry (13-38, 6-22 SSC) stayed alive in the top of the fifth with a solo home run. ERAU had a chance to end the game in the bottom of the inning, but the inning ended with the bases loaded. The Eagles had another chance in the sixth, but again, they stranded another runner in scoring position.
The Buccaneers tried to mount a comeback in the seventh. They plated a run in the inning, but they ultimately fell victim to a game-ending double play, sealing the 8-2 win for ERAU.
Jackson earned her 14th win of the season. She gave up one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Pereira and
ReAnne Drayton both went 2-for-4 at the plate. Pereira led the Eagles with four RBIs.
Both teams' seasons will conclude with a Saturday doubleheader. The first game on senior day is set to take place at 11 a.m.
