ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Two current Embry-Riddle women's golfers and another future Eagle had a great opportunity earlier this month to compete at the South Atlantic Women's Amateur Championship (SALLY) at Oceanside Country Club.
Brigitte Clements and
Olivia Whitten were joined by ERAU signee Reni Jancszik as three of just over 100 of the best female amateur golfers in the world, competing in one of the oldest surviving amateur golf classics in the country.
"The SALLY is one of the finest events in women's golf," Embry-Riddle Head Coach
Maria Lopez said. "It's on the same footing as any major championship. The best competition from all over the planet, on a layout that will challenge every aspect and shot in your game. It is the longest running women's amateur championship at a single location in the world where many of the legends of women's golf have competed over the years."
The 2020 event, which ran from Jan. 8-11 featured one of, if not the, strongest fields in tournament history. Jancsik, who is set to join the Eagles in the fall, carded a 331 (87-83-79-86), with Clements at 351 (88-98-80-85) and Whitten finishing with a 354 (94-92-86-82). Amanda Doherty of Florida State won the event for the second consecutive year, carding a 286 (69-75-71-71). For full results: Click Here.
"Since the inception of our program we've been extended an invitation for our top players that meet the handicap requirement to compete at the SALLY," Lopez said. "Not only is it an unbelievable honor and opportunity, it's an experience that provides lessons and growth opportunities that are priceless. The golf course conditions are always pristine with lightning fast greens and diverse weather. Our student-athletes get to play and walk where legends of the game made the sport become what it is today. This year's weather brought 20-30 mph winds and a stiff wind chill. It tested every part of the player's games. I am so proud of the self-management, course management and spirit with which our players competed. Their maturity and grit to which they manage the weight of the event and its challenges was some of the best I've ever seen. They competed in a way that has prepared them for an amazing semester ahead."
Embry-Riddle will open the 2020 spring season in St. Augustine, Feb. 10-11 at the World Golf Invitational, hosted by Flagler.
