MELBOURNE, Fla. - It was an unfortunate night for the Embry-Riddle men's basketball team to have its worst shooting performance of 2019-20 as the Eagles dropped a close away game to Florida Tech, 77-70.
The Eagles (16-9, 8-9 SSC) shot just 32 percent from the floor (20-for-62) and only 21 percent from three (7-for-33); but despite that, were still in a position to win late, but a crucial 11-0 run by the Panthers (11-14, 5-12) in the final five minutes of the contest sent the Eagles to their eighth-straight road loss.
Luka Majstorovic registered the 10th double-double of his senior season and 20th of his career, going for 17 points and 12 rebounds, leading the way for the Blue and Gold.
Romeo Crouch finished with 15 points, four boards and three assists, while
Nick Heard had 13 points and eight rebounds.
The game started very slowly as ERAUÂ led just 6-4 after five minutes, but the visitors stretched their lead to 18-10 on a Majstorovic layup at the 8:47 mark of the first half.
Florida Tech responded and appeared to have a lead going into the break, but Crouch hit a buzzer-beating three to tie the game at 33-33 after one half of play.
Both teams played evenly over the first few minutes of the second period, trading the lead four times in the first eight minutes, but around the 12-minute mark the Panthers made a run to go up eight (52-44).
Embry-Riddle clawed its way back into it, mostly at the free throw line where they held a distinct advantage throughout the contest.
David Park's jumper in the paint at the 6:12 mark put Embry-Riddle up 62-61, but that was the last time the visitors would lead.
The Panthers went on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes as the Eagles were held 0-for-5 from the field and turned the ball over three times, falling behind 72-62 before a Crouch bucket stopped the bleeding.
Crouch's three-pointer a few moments later cut the FT lead to 72-69 with around a minute to go, and after the Eagles forced a Panther turnover, Crouch had a three that would have tied it, but it missed, and after a Panther rebound the Eagles were forced to foul.
The hosts went 4-for-5 at the charity stripe to close the game out for the seven-point win. Florida Tech snapped a four-game ERAU winning streak in the series.
Embry-Riddle hosts Saint Leo on Feb. 19 in the ICI Center for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
